My friend, Teli, flew with me down to visit with my Mom in California. We had such a great time. Teli is such a joy and she was fascinated with Mom's stories - and Mom was thrilled to have someone to tell them to!!
First night we decided to go out to eat in the small town she lives in. Big mistake. There does not seem to be a decent restaurant around. I ordered a fried pork chop which tasted exactly like liver... even same consistency. Tried to feed to cat - no luck. However, I left it out overnight and we think a raccoon ate it. Anyway, we then went to the Coloma Theater to see a melodrama. These are a kick. You cheer, laugh, throw things and boo at the antics as they occur. We went ready to cause a wild ruckus. Mom bought the popcorn and we cheered and whooped as soon as curtains opened. Then we booed at the bad people. But... the whole thing immediately went flat. Nothing worth even a giggle except Little Bo Peep who rearranged Mother Goose poems. It was so bad that at half time we walked straight outside, looked at each other and decided we were leaving. We didn't want to hurt anyone, so we sat outside the theater for a bit (don't know how they wouldn't miss us - we were in the front row). As soon as they closed the doors to begin again we RAN to the car and I shot out of there. I've never been to a bad melodrama. The fun part, though, was our giggling all the way home like we had gotten away with something.
Also got to see some of the wonderful people who live around her who keep an eye out to be sure she is safe. What a blessing to live in a small community where people watch out for each other. Anyway, we talked, shopped quickly one afternoon, ate a lot and even played penney-poker one night. I had no idea it would be so difficult to find pennies - none of the stores wanted to give thm up! I even tried the liquor store.
The day before we were to leave Alaska Airlines sent an EMAIL saying our flight had been cancelled and to give them a call to make new reservations. First, our phone numbers were on the reservations, so why didn't they call us? What happens when people aren't glued to email during their vacation? We re-arranged the flights twice and finally got them to give us a future credit of $75 each on a future flight. Yet, I found myself disappointed in them.
Terrific time for all, BTW, the picture is taken on mom's back deck. Surrounded by these trees. Wow
