Since Helen came to visit, we decided to have a few last adventures before we left Costa Rica. We showed her around town, took her downtown, to the market, and shopping. We also visited two different volcanoes!
The first volcano is called Arenal. It is the typical volcano you think of when you hear the word volcano. It is a perfect cone shaped volcano that stands alone next to a pretty lake. The volcano is at 5,358 ft. We rented a car and drove there from our home in the city. The drive was mostly on a small two lane road that wound through the mountains. It took us four hours to get there. The company forgot to put a gps in the car so luckily we had a good map and new the country and spanish pretty well. Because there are rarely road names in Costa Rica, you just have to follow the signs to see what town to go towards. You have to constantly follow with your finger on the map. The nice thing is that there aren't as many roads in Costa Rica as the U.S. It took us almost four hours to get there.
We stayed at a nice hotel by the volcano. They had hot springs, pools, waterslides, and a little zoo kind of area, all at the hotel. It was so nice. We also did a ziplining tour at the hotel. This zipline was lots of fun! It was about 12 lines and some were as high as 150' off the ground. We also took a drive the one day around the lake and found a nice restaurant on the lake. The volcano was just amazing. It loomed over everything around it and on a cloudy day the clouds covered it and you couldn't even tell this massive structure was there. It was quite a sight. The volcano is still active so we couldn't hike on it. We had so much fun there though!
The next volcano is called Irazu. This volcano is right next to the city of San Jose and it looks like a regular mountain. We drove all the way to the top of it where there is a park. We were able to walk on old craters and see a great view! As we were up there the clouds rolled in around us! The elevation of this volcano is 11,260 ft. The elevation of San Jose is 3,840 ft. It was quite a hike up the mountain. Glad we had a car! It was also much cooler ontop of the volcano because of the elevation.
We had so much fun the last few days. Packing up was sad, strange, and exciting.
