Day two in Bangkok.
It's my second day here and I'm still surprised how hot it gets the moment I leave my room. And I don't even keep the air-con on all the time. The fans, present everywhere indoors give me headache. Even now whe I'm writing it I have a massive fan blowing right in my ear. I think I might start to wear earplugs indoors.
I didn't go to sleep yesterady till 2.30am. Jet lag, I guess. So when I was woken up by some noise at 10.30am I decided that it's definitely way to early to get up so I put a "Please do not disturb' on the door and went back to sleep.
three hours later I was ready to move. From the bed. I wasn't hungry but I decoded to have some noodles before going out. I wasn't up to much sightseeing. I wanted to check if I can get to Hua Lamphong railway station by public transport so I would't have to take a taxi tomorrow. Glad I've tried. Having taken an Express boat (25 Baht one way) down the river from Pier 13 to Pier 3, River City I started to walk towards the station. What seemed like an easy short stroll (on the map) turned out to be a 40 minute madness of trying to navigate the streets that did not really exist on my map. At some point I kind of started to follow an old man that was walking in front of me. It was nice to have a 'companion' on these empty streets. He happened to take me all the way to the station. O'm really grateful for my sense of direction because the mao was crap. I made it to the station but I would never like to repeat that walk with my backpack on.
In the station I did a quick recon, platforms, toilets etc. There was a lovely train in platform three - posh and all. I guess it was the Thai Orient Express. Looked really lovely but it is way above my budget.
As I needed to get back to the river to catch the boat back to Kao San Road I decided to walk through Chinatown. Not that I really wanted to see it. We stayed in Chinatown 3 years ago. I just couldn't face the walk back the same way.
Had some coconut water. Yum. Made ot to the pier via market. Still to far to walk with luggage.
When I retured to the hostel I got a message from Tory on Facebook. She just arrived in Bangkok, fying to Chiang Mai tomorrow. She gave me her phone number so we could meet up for dinner. Unfortunately it was one digit short.
I went out on Kao San Road to get some street food. Didn't go adventurous and bypassed all fried worms, scorpions and locust and opted for a veggie pad thai (25Baht, in hostel it's 80Baht).Having saved some cash I treated myself to a beer in a bar by the street. I would have had one more but I got tired. The streets are too busy, too noisy. It's like sitting on Oxford Street. Might be interesting for a visitor but you just can stand it after 15 minutes.
Time to sit down, relax and read a book. I had to swap the one I brought with me cos it was impossible to read. I traded the old one and got a new one, 'The Sanctuary" by Raymond Khoury for 50 Baht. Not bad:)
