Hello everyone,
I completed my epic journey across the world, 5 separate plane journeys. I have had no sleep for a good 48 hours at least, so I am absolutely shattered.
I met my family at the airport on my way through which was amazing, it was so nice to see everyone again and catch up properly.
We also went and checked out Norman the Tropical Ulcer and friends at an English pharmacy and were instantly told to go to A&E before my flight the following morning. So my lovely family all took me to the nearest hospital to get my diseased leg checked out by an English Doctor instead of the back street ones that I have been visiting in SE Asia. She was unable to diagnose the source of the problem but was able to give me a hefty dose of antibiotics, which I am hoping will clear things up.
After visiting the hospital I said my last goodbyes to my family, which was sad once again, I kinda wish I could have stayed at home for a few nights before jetting off again, that would have been great, instead I slept (or not) in Heathrow airport. I would have loved to have some home cooking and my own bed, oh well I'm in Mexico now, it can't be all bad.
Literally as soon as I touched down in London I started to feel really ill with fever like symptoms, which is still with me, it's not very nice. The next 2 plane journeys, which consisted of a 10 hour flight from Heathrow to Houston Texas and then a further 3 hour journey on to Mexico City were not very nice. I just couldn't eat or sleep (which wouldn't have helped matters) and generally felt and still feel really rubbish.
After a transfer from the airport via taxi I ended up at my hostel, called Hostel Amigo. I saw a shed load of Police en route from the airport which made me slightly apprehensive as there is some big ass drug related warfare taking place at present...................eeeeeeek.
Anywho back to Hostel Amigo, it is a nice place located right in the heart of the city near the Zocalo, which is where the city's main square and Cathedral are located. I arrived on the 30th Oct, oh I have to say happy birthday to Jeff, as his birthday was yesterday (30th). Anyway arrived yesterday in Mexico and was informed on arrival to the reception that there was a big party happening in the hostel that night. I was still feeling like absolute crap at this point, so I didn't think that I would be much fun, coupled with the lack of sleep that I had had over the past few days, it wasn't a recipe for a happening night, but I had to throw myself into things.
I am in a dorm room with 8 people, some peoples names I know, others I have forgotten already :). I have Michelle in the bunk above me, she is from Finland, we also have Paul from Essex, Megan from Australia, Mega who is also from Australia, Collin from England and 2 nice French dudes, who's names I can't remember.
Everyone is very friendly and we all sat down in the hostel together and tucked into some Mexican food, provided by the hostel before the nights antics ensued. There were lots of cool costumes knocking about which people had been preparing, but as I had only just arrived so I had to pull together a make shift outfit, in the end Harry Potter, with the help of Megas face painting skills.
It took quite a few drinks before I was able to block out the illness, but I powered through and got passed it. It was a good night actually, we had pinnate's and stuff which was cool.
Everyone got pretty messy which was all good. I now write this blog to you from my bunk whilst listening to the soothing tunes of Sigur Ros to help cleanse the body and mind :). The illness has returned as I knew it would, so coupled with what is undoubtedly a hangover I also have a fever too, lovely jubbly.
I am still going to try and brave the heat and head out and explore today though. I am going to head to Chapultepec Park, which is meant to be really nice and has the Museo Nacional de Anthropologia, which is apparently a must see whilst on Mexico City.
I also made plans with some of the guys at the hostel to go and watch a football match tonight at the national stadium, which will be pretty cool if we all manage to meet up.
Last night during the drunkenness I also changed my plans, which consisted of taking an expensive flight over to Cancun to see all of the ruins. I am now joining up with a large group of people from the hostel and heading to a place called Oaxaca. This place is notorious for it's Day of the Dead celebrations, which take place on the 1st and 2nd November, so that should be a pretty cool experience to witness. I thought that as I happened to be here at this particular time I may as well embrace some local culture and celebrations. I'll be able to fit in a few ruins before Guatemala, so that's all good. Guatemala is meant to have some pretty impressive ruins too, so I'm sure I'll cope with missing a few in Mexico.
I am looking forward to meeting my Guatemalan host family on 7th Nov too, I will be with them for a whole month so that should be pretty cool, hopefully I will be speaking the lingo in no time.
Right I am going to head out now, so I'll probably speak to you all tomorrow.
Lots of love x
