Hello hello,
I arrived safe and sound in Antigua, whoop whoop, no burnt out buses or anything, one of the many horror stories that I heard before embarking on that particular journey.
So in Palenque I was told that I would be able to get a bus direct to Antigua from the Mexican border, this didn't turn out to be the case. I had to get 5 separate chicken buses, which are basically the stereotypical american school bus, clad in crazy artwork and filled to the brim with every man and his dog....................it was a good experience though.
I originally thought that I'd arrive in Antigua at about 17:00pm, ready to meet my host family, but this wasn't the case, I arrived at 21:00pm without a clue where I was in relation to anywhere of importance (my host families house). It just so happened that I stumbled across a market stool that had a load of phones to use for the public, a stroke of luck as I had a contact that was able to help. I managed to arrange a lift with my Spanish course director called Ricardo, who dropped me off at my host families place, which happened to be just round the corner from where I was standing.
My host family are really nice, they speak little English which I'd kinda good for the development of my Spanish. I had my first Spanish lesson today (08 Nov) which went pretty well I think, all those days sat talking to myself in the car whilst listening to Spanish CD's definitely helped, I'd be pretty hopeless otherwise I think. I had a good laugh and was able to communicate pretty well with my teacher, which was all good for the first days lesson.
I found out today that young Anna from back home, who is heading out to meet me in Guatemala is actually going to be here on 21st Nov, next week, so I am not sure whether to spend the following week learning more Spanish or going ahead with my plan to do the building project.
I had originally planned to do the building project for 3 weeks, and expected to meet Anna after that but on this situation I'd only get to take part in the building project for a single week now, and at $300 for a one off donation it doesn't really make financial sense to do it, 3 weeks yes, 1 week, not really. So I am leaning towards doing another weeks Spanish now, before meeting Anna in the ghetto that is Guatemala City, which should be really cool.
I have also been talking to Leo too, who I met earlier in Asia. We were discussing the possibility of me flying to Buenos Aires in Argentina for New Years Eve, which if I can get flights cheap enough could be an amazing option. I am definitely considering it.
That's all for now, I am heading out for a leaving do for one of the girls on my house.
I'll report back on Spanish school and what not soon.
