My day of airports was rattled by the taxi driver arriving at 9.40 rather than 9. Alas he did get me to the airport just in time to check-in, have a drink, and board with a large group of South African rugby players. Not all bad I suppose.
The Bobotie on the plane didn't exactly match the one I'd had in Stellenbosch, but the plane did arrive 15 minutes ahead of schedule: typical, as I was hoping for a delay to break up my 9 hour wait!
Whilst I was waiting for my bag, a few people mentioned their zip ties had been cut and their bags opened - I marched straight to the bag wrap to ensure mine was safe. In my haste I'd forgotten how hard it was to carry a rucksack without having straps to throw it over your shoulder. At least it wasn't too long of a walk to the check-in. One woman said I couldn't check my bag until 3 hours before the flight, but once I'd done a circuit with the plastic alien another said it was fine! I checked in for my 10pm flight at 2.15. Joy.
I passed my time by eating some strange green pancakes and then perusing the many shops of Johannesburg airport - there's no need to travel around Africa, just look around there! I'm sure I was going straight home I'd be buying the ostrich eggs and wooden animals too, but as Australia was likely to confiscate it all I settled on a few bottle openers. Next time.
