so new zealand so far.
arrived in christchurch with a shock of cold weather, which we werent ready for after some of the hottest weather we have had in melbourne. unfortunately there isnt much to say about christchurch....just another big city. but it gave us time to catch up with some old friends and obviously make some new ones. although we stayed in the dorms we made friends with someone who was living in the penthouse suite (where they have their own tv room, kitchen and playstation) and thus we spent most of our time dossing in there.
when we ventured out of the city we took a day trip out to akaroa where we partook in some kayaking and a trip on a speed boat to take in some of the most amazing views i think we have seen throughout our whole trip. the photos dont really do the place justice.
from christchurch we travelled to a place called kaikora. a little place not really known for much really apart from the resident whales in the area. so we went on a whale watching trip (we were gauranteed to see at least one whale). in fact we saw quiet a few. we saw two sperm whales, at least five orka's and a pod of about 200-300 dolphins. was really worth an aftrenoon trip before heading back to the fun filled lodgings for a bbq.
after a decent sleep we headed onto a little place called nelson. once again not alot to do here but we had some fun along the way as we stopped at lakes and riviers to wake us up with a cold swim...and obviously some good photo opportunities.
after nelson was another small town called westport, known really for the abel tasman national parks situated very near to the town.
the infamous pu pub was next. its a stop during the travel where you get dropped at a pub in the middel of nowhere, pretty much only used by a few locals and a daily stop by the kiwi bus. this place is known for its fancy dress parties. so on the way to the pub we had a day to get soem ideas together and about an hour to actually buy our costumes. the four of us (me, webby, pedro and our new south sfrican friend alex) decided we would really put as much effort into the task to try and win some prizes. nice easy theme for our party...BINLINERS. our theme...TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. and so began a major rush around a small town to get our supplies. we managed to make the most amazing costumes, with a bit of rule bending. what followed was a manic night of fun, once again photos will follow.
next stop was franz josephfor our glacier treck. we were booked on a whole day treck up the glacier. probably one of my most memorable parts of travelling so far, one of the most amazing things i have ever done. standing infront of the glacier contemplating the climb we were going to have to do was very daunting, esp after months of zero exercise. the day was very tiring and challenging at some points but definitely well worth it, and we all made it back in one piece with no injuries, unlike some groups (the worst incident was one of the guides falling and cutting his head, damaging his wrist and breaking his hip, bring on a helicopter exit from the glacier)
latest stop is in wanaka. such a beautiful little town surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery. a dip in lake wanaka today blew away any cobwebs from celebrating one of our friends birthdays the night before.
next stop tomorrow is the action packed queenstown with the prospects of bungee jumping and possibly some canyon swinging.
