After a 7 hour bus on some pretty hairy roads through the mountains, we arrived in Vang Vieng at 3pm yesterday. We dumped our stuff and went out to find food at one of the local eats which all show endless re runs of friends episodes so a quick lunch turned into a relaxed 2 hours while we planned what we want to do the next few days. We then had an explore around the town which is really small and then retired to the hostel for a shower. After a freshen up we went to dinner and met up with 2 friends (Jonathan and Victoria) who we had taken the slow boat with. Again we watched old friends episodes and had a few beers. We then learnt of 2 bars in town that give you free drinks between 9-10 and 10-11, no one is sure why they do this or how they make money because at 9.59 everyone leaves one bar for the next and then at 10.59 everyone heads home or to one of the bigger bars. So after several drinks and a few games Sarah and I headed for bed.
Today we had organised to do a caving and kayaking trip which lasted from 9-3, included lunch, and cost us $15 each. The caving was excellent, armed with a head torch, we all sat on large inner tubes and then floated into this very small cave which runs on for 500m of which we went 50m in, pulling yourself along roads attached to the side. After an hour or so we emerged back into the sunlight and had a BBQ'd lunch which was delicious. We kayaking started not long after and we kayaked/floated the 10km back into Vang Vieng via a bar on the side of the river.
Tonight we are meeting an English couple we met today (Ollie and Jasmine) for dinner and then go for some drinks. They have been to Vietnam already so we are going to pick their brains then have a quiet day tomorrow and sketch out a rough plan for our time in Vietnam as it is only 11 days until we fly to Hanoi!
