We are taking a strange route around the North Island. From Hawke's Bay we drove back up to Taupo to see the lake. Lake Taupo is the largest lake in NZ, it's the same size as Singapore and was created by a volcanic explosion many years ago.
Geography lesson over, last time we came here the weather was so bad you could hardly see the lake so we had to come back. Taupo & Rotorua are the two main geothermal areas and half way between then is Wai-O-Tapo, "The Thermal Wonderland". Take a look at the photos, it's a strange place!
From Taupo we headed south to Ohakune, a small skiing village at the base of Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano, with snow on the peak still. We have been into Tongariro National Park which is also home to two other Mountains/Volcanos and even been up to the snow for a quick play in shorts and flip-flops!
We are leaving here for Wellington tomorrow and onto the South Island on Thursday, I hope the weather continues although sunshine and campervans don't go so well together! We keep getting woken by the temperature in the van as soon as the sun comes up. People who leave their dogs in cars should have to sleep in campervans during the New Zealand summer!
