We've had a couple of driving days from Collingwood in the far North, through Westport and down to Franz Josef Glacier.
Whilst on the subject of driving, it's something the New Zealanders are rubbish at! They all drive like its Sunday afternoon with the exception of those few that drive at 100mph everywhere. They overtake on blind bends with the aid of an extra sensory perception or the population is so small the statistical likelihood of something coming is small? The have no use for indicators, they can't handle round-a-bouts, don't even start me on the whole turning into a side road and giving way thing! Most seem to tow boats; I'm sure their boats spend more time being towed than they do in the water. There are thousands of huge campervans and too may hills! All this in a country where car insurance is optional!
Anyway en-route from the north we stopped at Lakes Rotoiti & Rotoroa in the Nelson LakesNational Park, the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes and eventually arrived at Franz Josef Glacier (the name of the town and the Glacier).
Today we've been up to the Glacier along the river bed, which is an hours walk, then took a walk over the river and high bridge for views from the other side. Tomorrow we'll drive over to Fox Glacier which is only about half an hour away and do some of the walks there. Hopefully the weather will cheer up a little so we can see the summit of Mount Cook.
I forgot to mention that Kiwis are very nice people but put them in a car and they won't let you out of a parking space or junction and when you try to teach them how its done they don't say thank you!!
