We woke at 4am and headed to Finca Madelana where we started our hike up Volcan Maderas. It started off quite normal, following a trail of trea trunk steps, but then we entered the jungle and had narrow paths to squeeze through. We got to a section which was very muddy and we struggled to stay clean, our boots taking the brunt of the sticky wet mud. The further up we went the more dense and wet the vegetation became and it felt like we were in Hogwarts' forbidden forest. We finally reached the top after three and a half hours of walking and then we descended down into the crater climbing over huge rocks. The floor of the crater was covered in mist but you could just make out a lake. It was very windy and wet so after a quick snack we headed back. This time it was much harder as the rain had made the trail even muddier and extremely slippy. We were sliding around and used branches to help jump past the bigger pools of muddy water. Our boots had been engulfed with the swampy water and we struggled for grip as the mud had clogged their soles. After a long, muddy, wet walk down we finally came out of the cloud forest and heard monkeys above. We watched them jumping around before exiting the national park.
