We arrived in the beautiful colonial city of Granada at 8pm and it was nice to see people still walking the streets. With its outdoor dining and Spanish influence, Granada has a Mediterranean feel to it. We spent the next day wandering round the town exploring the churches and cathedrals as well as relaxing in the central park.
We went on a four hour, evening boat journey to Isla Ometepe, an island in the vast Lake Nicaragua formed by twin volcanoes. We spent our first day making sand versions of the volcanoes Maderas and Conception in Santa Domingo where we also enjoyed relaxing on the black beach and playing in the warm lake.
The next day we had an early start for our trip up Volcan Maderas. It was a great experience but not sure its something we want to do again!
The following day we got a short boat ride and then a taxi back to Granada. On Phant's birthday we went up Volcan Masaya (mostly by car this time, thankfully) an active volcano which had loads of smoke coming out of the crater but sadly we didn't see any lava. We also went into a lava cave with bats flying all around us. That night we enjoyed a lovely pizza at the Mona Lisa restaurant where our Chianti was served chilled in an ice bucket; we spent half the night warming it up!
