I don't know how China keeps doing it but every day on this trip has provided me with another something amazing to wonder over. The first trip on today's agenda was to visit the Urban Planning Center. I did not have a strong idea of what urban planning meant but as soon as I entered the building, I understood the monumental scale of the job. Within the building was a massive, to-scale model of 1/16 of the entire city of Shanghai. I wish I was better at English and writing so I can describe how intricate and complex the model is to represent a city as complicated as Shanghai. The model included buildings, green space, bridges and accurate representations of rivers and other landmarks. It was really an unbelievable sight to see. What was even more amazing was the fact that the center continues to update the model as the city expands and grows.
The second half of the day was spent at an adult care home on the outskirts of Shanghai. On the way to the care home, I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach because the seniors were told that we had a skit/dance prepared to perform in front of them when in actuality, we had nothing great planned. Luckily, when it was our turn to perform, we quickly decided that we would change our idea to perform the song, "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes." Fortunately for us, the song was a hit with our wonderful audience. They joined in with us and even taught us the Shanghainese equivalent words for our song. We heard a lot of loud laughter and saw a lot of happy faces that really made me happy that we took the time to include a service project into our trip.
