The first half of the day was spent doing cultural events and visiting some of China's iconic places. We visited the Forbidden City and Tianenmen Square and marveled at how grand the places were. It's a little hard to imagine how they were able to construct so much with so little knowledge of modern physics and mathematics. One downside I noticed about the constructions was that they did not make it easy for less-abled people to navigate throughout the Forbbiden City. All of the doors had slight rises to them that was meant to prevent ghosts and rain water from going in/out but it also makes it difficult for elderly people & people with disabilities to go about their business in the structures. I wonder how they dealt with that issue back in the days.
After the cultural visits, we took the bullet train to Shanghai. The bullet train has got to be one of the most amazing pieces of technolgoy I've ever used. I wonder why we don't have it in the US. It would make it so easy and cost effective to travel between major cities. It would also allow people to work farther from home and still make it to work at the same time it takes them to travel by plane. I'm a little upset that technolgoy like the bulle train exists but the US is failing to adapt the new standards in transportation.
Lastly, I explored Shanghai last night with Mario, Maddy and Fatima. We went down to the Bundt in efforts to find a bar, but ended up just using it as time to explore the town. It was neat to be in an area with old and new buildings so you could see the constrast between the two differently styles. The older styles were more ornate and relied heavily on bricks whereas the newer buildings had smoother walls and and looked more similar to one another.
