You can guess how we felt this morning, waking up at 8am to the sound of the alarm clock. Yes, Christina and I were what you could say....slightly hung over!
I got ready and headed out at 9am to pick up Pup and Tae and left Christiana behind to get ready. I met our two friends outside Burger King in the town and returned to our hotel to pick up Christina. At least we were not the only ones with a hangover. Pup and Tae went out last night after the pub shut and went to one of the night clubs until 3 am, although Pup didn't drink, Tae had a bad hangover too.
We planned our route a little bit first in our hotel room and then we all headed out for our drive around the island.
The first place that we went to was called the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks, and it does not really need any explanation, just have a look at the photos I have attached. Some of you may already know what these are as I sent you a postcard with them on.
Once we stopped laughing at the last place we were at, we headed to Wat Khun Aram where we saw the undercomposed remains of a monk called Phra Khru Samathakittikhun who was born in 1894 and died in 1974. Since then he has been mummified and displayed in the temple. See attached pictures of old dead monk in sunglasses! If you are a bit squeamish then I advise you don’t look.
After these two surreal experiences, we were brought quickly back down to earth as I had to stop the car half way up a mountain road so that Christina and Tae could be sick as they were really suffering from their hangovers with the heat and the motion of the car. Ha ha, lightweights!!!
We finally made it up the mountain after having to turn back several times as the road had disappeared due to a landslide down one side of the mountain, but luckily for us, we managed to find a route up which took us to the top of Khoa Khwang mountain which was only around 500m high but was the highest point in the south end of the island. The viewpoint was a platform at a restaurant so we felt obliged to buy a drink and an ice cream from them for the use of their viewing deck, just so we could take a couple of pictures of the view.
On the way back down from the mountain we were told by Pup and Tae that we should stop at the Tarnim magic garden. Pup and Tae said that they were our guides and got in free and we paid about £5 each to get in. I wish we hadn’t bothered as all it was, was a garden with a stream running through it and a lots of statues and animals carved in to some of the rocks. I couldn’t quite work out where the "magical" part came from??? Anyway, I suffered it, so I think you should too, so I have attached a couple of photos from here.
While we were at the magical gardens and Christina and Tae were still not feeling too good so we thought it was best for them to go home and sleep off the rest of their hangovers. I dropped Christina off first at the hotel and went with the two girls in to town to a travel agent they knew to try and book some train tickets back to Bangkok as it was out last day and Christina had a flight home from there in two days time. We got there and as we had left it too late the train was full and our only option to get back to Bangkok was to book tickets for the bus which takes 16 hours and may not even get there in time for Christina’s flight or to book two more flights direct to Bangkok. As Christina and 16 hours on a bus would not have got on too well and we were risking her missing her plane, I booked the two flights. I didn’t really fancy the bus either but blamed Christina!
Flights booked, and I dropped off the two girls in town and went back to the hotel to tell Christina of our plans.
That evening we went out early in to town and had some dinner at a restaurant that we had been to a few days previously. We were not going to drink too much tonight as we had to get up early for the flight and obviously, Christina was not feeling up to it again J After dinner we took a walk along the beach and launched Chinese lantern on the beach for good luck, which was something that I had always wanted to do and it was a very romantic moment! We stood there watching our lantern until it finally disappeared or went out very high in the sky and then went to the Ark Bar on the beach where we set on the sun beds which had been set up flat with blankets and a big triangular cushion so that you could lie down and have a drink while watching the sea come in.
