Pete and Louise's Great Adventure
Hello all, Louise here.
We're still really enjoying ourselves in Singapore. It's obviously been a very bikey weekend. The world round competition took place on Sentosa Island on Sunday, which is beautiful, but very manufactured, so we spent most of the weekend there. We explored a little, going to the Southern-most point on Continental Asia, seeing the famous 'Merlion' statue and having a swim in the boiling sea. There was a welcome reception there on the Friday where Pete ended up having to dance to 'Dancing Queen' by Abba on the stage. Long story, but no it wasn't alcohol induced as all that was on offer beverage wise was rose cordial (which tastes like Turkish Delight!)
More importantly, Pete did brilliantly - 10th in the world in this round! I'm very proud of him. The heat was unbelievable though and because there aren't many places to ride, the sections were spread throughout the island which meant heaps of walking. I was sweating in places that I didn't think could sweat! It was a really good trial to watch though, as it was laid out on the beach and the rainforest. Unfortunately, I didn't see any monkeys, but I did see 2 huge geko lizards - one was nearly 2 metres long and the other about a metre and their presence probably explains why there's a track called the 'dragon's trail' through the forest. There are rocks shaped as dragons all along the trail, which Pete had to ride over, so I've got some cool photos. He also had to ride up and down waterfalls, which caused his one major crash! I feared for his nose, but he was ok, just very wet!
Today we've been exploring Chinatown, which very much lives up to it's name. We had some yummy food; dinner was a heap of rice and vegetables served on a huge banana leaf and it cost about 1 pound! I bought my one souvenir - a jade ring, which I really like, and also cost me a pound. The lady tells me it's a 'lucky stone'. Among others, we saw the oldest temple in Singapore, and walked along the river to see the theatre building which looks like a spikey tropical fruit they have here!
The hostel situation has not really improved through having our own room, as it is in the attic where there are no windows & the air conditioning unit is too small to cool the room - average temparature is 34oC in there! On top of that our 'en-suite' bathroom is still the one we were using before, as we have to walk through that mixed dorm to get up to our room! Very sneaky! However, they are really nice here, the free breakfast of toast and loads of tropical fruit is a huge bonus and they are so helpful with advice of how to get to places, so I've actually grown quite fond of it (flip flops in the shower are a definite necessity though).
Tomorrow's our last day here, then off to Japan in the early hours of the morning. Update soon.
