Pete and Lou's Big Adventure
Campervan is wicked, its small, compact but very cosy! We have a bed, a little gas stove, an esky and a 20 litre water bottle but not much else! No mod cons like some of the other campervans so its as it should be. Our campervan is called Bilbo...! Quite appropriate don't you think?? Our first stop Bay of Islands..a beautiful place but very touristy. We sailed around the islands here and saw dolphins and penguins in the wild! The highlight was a baby dolphin showing off and doing tricks behind the boat...but too fast for any snaps though. The islands were gorgeous but the seas became a little rough when we ventured into the poenness of the Pacific! We visited Cape Brett and the Hole in the Rock which was pretty impressive. We stayed here in a place called Pahia for a few days where we did some walking and visited the Haraka Falls.
From here we headed into Northland and Cape Reinga via the Discovery Coast and 90 Mile Beach. Cape Reinga is the most northerly part of the North Island. A place steeped in maori history, according to Maori legend this is the place where spirits travel to after a death to leave this world and enter another. It was a bit of a mission getting there, there was noone around and we had climb hill upon hill of unsealed road...poor Bilbo! The view of the Pacific and Tasman Seas were amazing!! And this place had a strangely spiritual feel to it. Quite eerie at times.
Anyway it is goodnight from us, take it easy!
