I've arrived in Luang Prabang after the two day slow-boat journey from the Thai / Lao border. It wasn't too bad as it was broken up by an overnight stop in Pakbeng, much card playing (learned to play Taki with some Israeli girls) and getting to know some new people. You meet people from all across the globe, including one guy from the Wirral who used to work at Vauxhalls and Airbus! He's even drank in the Woodlands and Old Wirral Hundred!
The last night in Thailand was spent in a small town, where I went for food with Vic, Nicki, Fergus and a couple of Dutch girls. The boat journey was okay, with the port of Luang Prabang a much welcome sight. I say port, more like a jetty. This was followed by a much more laid back approach by the people trying to get you into their guest houses, which was to be an indication as to the attitude of the people of Luang Prabang. There's plenty of things to do but for now we've just chilled out and done some sight-seeing.
The bars in this town close at 12, much to mine and Vic's disappointment. We did walk for 20 mins to find the only bar in town open later but it was rubbish so we came home. We wlso went to the late night market yesterday. I've no idea how the people make a living, as they all sell the same things at very low prices. Whilst at the market, we bumped into the girls from our jungle trip in Chiang Mai. Although we set off a day before them, they decided to 'Gucci-style' it and fly! That's just cheating! :-)
Although the Mekong itself is quite boring, the scenery is special. Even around the jungles near Chiang Mai, it reminds me of something from Jurassic Park...or Predator. :)
Oh yeah, in Chiang Mai, we saw some more Muay Thai boxing, I got talking to a lad about the differnces between Muay Thai and Karate. Interesting, as I don't speak Thai and he didn't speak English!
I'll try and update this again soon as I've got to go and meet Vic now. We're off to see another temple, I think it's called Phou Si. Apparently, it really high and the sunset is something to behold from there. It's a bit cloudy at the mo, so we may be disappointed. Tonight should be a good night as we got loads of sleep last night - well needed after only a few hours per night for the last few! I've got more photos to come, just need to find the time to upload. Bye for now!
