We spent two and a half days in Iguazu. Arriving on Monday 18th February we had sufficient time for a late afternoon visit as the crowds were leaving. There are crowds at the falls at Iguazu; they arrive in coach-loads around 11 am and begin to leave around 4pm. Visits outside of these times is pleasant. The Park Authorities do manage the crowds well and there is a train system to get you around. On this first evening we took the train and walked to the biggest falls Giganta del Diablo. An amazing sight with a large flow of water thundering and large plumes of water.
Tuesday 19th February; we arrived in the park at 8.30 am and booked our trips. We were able to leave immediately, with the small group of early risers, to ride in speed boats up to and under the falls [San Martin Fall]; great fun. Wet bags were provided, but it took much of the day for our clothes to dry! We then visited an island [San Martin] on the middle of the river and below the falls; this gave us another set of amazing views of the falls and we were still ahead of the crowds. Next day the boat to the island did not run due to excess flow in the river [Brazil had opened its dams upstream] we were lucky in our choice; lesson learnt do it now it may not be available tomorrow. We then walked the two circuits of the falls; superior above the falls and inferior below the falls. By now it was early evening and we had booked on a visit to the falls by moonlight. This happens a few days either side of the new moon; that night was the full moon, another stroke of luck. This atmospheric visit was well worth doing.
Wednesday 20th February; we decided to split trips that day. Willis visited the falls on the Brazilian side and the included a visit to a Brazilian dam. David and Gillian did an early morning walk on a jungle trail, followed by a gentle drift in a boat down the Iguazu River; above the falls which was somewhat disconcerting as we could see the water ahead of us drop over the falls. Finally they had a two hour drive with a guide into the jungle which was spiced up by a tyre puncture in dense jungle; no jaguars took the opportunity for a quick meal however. They were able to see capuchin monkeys, ajouti, toucan and much more
