Penny's Big Adventure
Hi everyone,
Well this might be a long postcard, since I haven't written in a while...
I met up with Michelle in Auckland and she took me to all the beaches and showed me a lot of the area. I went shopping to buy a few warmer clothes as the south island is going to be quite cold now.
Ben and I drove from Auckland to the Waitomo Caves, which were a spectacular sight except when you're sharing a boat with a bunch of ignorant tourists who won't keep quiet when they're told. The caves are filled with glow worms and as you are transported through by tiny boat, it's like looking at the sky at night except the stars are green.
From there we drove to Lake Taupo and stayed the night. That whole area is volcanic and everywhere boasts hot spas which are heated from the volcanic activity below the earth's surface. Swam in a half indoor, half outdoor heated pool and watched the steam from the pool fill the air around you. It was lovely.
The next day at Taupo, I did my first EVER sky dive at 15,000 feet. I've also got some photos and a DVD, so i'll be sending that home for everyone to laugh at soon. I must say, it was a fantastic experience and I'll definitely do it again.
We then moved to Ohakune, which was also just a little town but again, full of Spa Baths etc. Drove 4,000 feet up a mountain which was a fantastic sight to see. It will be even more beautiful in winter when it's all covered in snow...
Yesterday we spent the day driving to Napier and then on to Hastings - picking up a couple of hitch hikers on the way. Napier is tiny, so there was no point stopping there. We drove on to Hastings and stayed the night there.
Today I'm in Upper Hut, just outside Wellington staying at Ben's parents' home. There are no firm plans as to when I'll move on to the south island but I'd say by Monday / Tuesday I'll be there.
So that's been the last few days really. I hope you're all well, keep in touch.
Love Penny xxx
