Before going to Rio I had no idea that Buzios existed but the name kept cropping up when we asked any locals where is good to go on our next step up the coast, so we had had to go for it. We booked a hostle on the net call ´Phoeinex Hostel´ it was very cheap (R$35) compared to other hostels in the area so we didn´t have particularly high hope´s but it was a place to rest our heads. When we arrived we realised it was an absolute bargain, the streets leading up to the hostel is all cobble stone, inside there is a pool and a funky little bar, we had an ultra clean 6 bet dorm to ourselves complete with a veranda and hammock, all within a 2 minute stroll from the beach... now this I can work with. Phoeinex is run by a great guy called Jonas whos´ biggest loves in life is surfing and Terrance! Terrance is a Labrador-Spaniel cross and probably one of the funniest and best dogs I have ever met, I could have literally taken him with me the rest of the way round the world with me if Jonas hadn´t been so fond of him!
In Buzios I spent the days surfing while Sal was sunbathing and the evenings chilling in the mammock reading and drinking the very expensive beer at R$1.30 (38p to us) or having Jonus´ amazing BBQ with Caprhina´s, Brazils classic cocktail (you don´t want to drink too many of these!) and the other residents of the hostel including a couple called Paddy and Laura who were just coming to the end of and epic 14 month trip cycling around the whole of south America, they had some great stories to tell including one about Paddy getting a ´second hole´, we never got to find out fully what happened with that one but it sounded very painful!!
One afternoon when Sal and I were heading out to the market to get somelunch and 38p beers our room got broken into by....... a toroise! Jonus later explained to us that the tortoise has a habit of breaking into rooms and it´s not uncommon for people to wake up in the morning with it staring at them from the floor.
What was meant to be 2 days in Buzios soon became 4 and we realised that we needed to get off our backsides and actually do more that just sit on the beach so we hired out a couple of high spec bikes (no gears and almost no breaks!) to explore some other beaches on ´the island´ as I kept calling it. It was a great day cycling across some tough terrain, ours was definatly the best beach though other than watching sunsets at Pria de Manguinos from the quiet little fishing peir with beer.
