We used Sao Luis as a bit of a stop over on our way to Belem, this was not the original plan because we were actually going to spend a few days in ´the jewel of the north´ but it was not quite so special compared to the likes of everywhere else we had been other then Fortaleza. However Sally has very fond memories of Soa Luis but only becuase we had jokingly been calling each other chubby then I sat on my bed and went straight through it! I remember thinking ´You win this round Carnall´!
On the on full day we had in Sao Luis we took a walk to find the ´Centro Historico´, after nearly 2 hours of searching we finally realised we had walked through it about 5 times (it was that spetacular!). It turned out that the beautiful building that every on talks about and that is the focal point of the city was the one that was opposite our shabby R$18 a night hostel (not that I{m compaining about the hostel, the shabbier the better for me).
I feel lik I am being very harsh about Sao Luis but it is only because the guides all say it´s one of the best cities in Brazil and I let my expectations raise too high, from now on I will wait to make my own opinion of a place, lesson learn´t. On reflection Sao Luis was actually a pretty place.
Just as we were waiting in the bus station ready to leave Sao Luis there was another moment of hillarity (for Sal anyway), I was grabbing some food when 4 crazy bee´s decided to attack me, as is the only natural response I went running off like a girl flailing my arms leaving Sally and 3 Brazilian women looking on almost wetting themselves at the crazy ´Gringo´ running through the station! The ´Jewel of the North´may not have been quite what I expected but I still had a great time there.

Dad Well Pedro the explorer, frightened out of a suburban bus shelter by a wasp..... not quite the British stiff upper lip!!! :-) Hope you are having a great time, I am sure that you will remember the not so spectacular places as sometimes you get to have the most memorable experiences there.
