After another good sleep, we headed south down past Moose Lake to Blue River Safaris to see if we could see any bears. We got there early and got on a boat quite quick. Our guide was Carter who hailed from Australia of all places!! There were about 10 of us on the boat. The others were either from Austria or Switzerland. We were the only New Zealanders! Carter then took us out onto the lake where we had to keep our eyes peeled for any sign of a bear. It wasn't until we were right at the far end of the lake that we saw on the island in the middle of the lake a brown little dot moving along the shoreline! A Bear!! We scootered over to the island, but just before getting there Carter cut the motor on the boat and we glided closer so not to disturb the bear. He was a male bear of about 4 years of age and seemed to be looking for something under all the rocks. He moved along the shore for about 10 minutes, so we got some good photos of him and being able to watch him for so long. He finally went up into the trees up high out of sight. Such a cool thing to see a real life bear!
After the bear disappeared, Carter took across the lake to see a waterfall. We hopped off the boat and walked up a pretty pathway in the forest to see a beautiful waterfall. We all had photos taken in front of it - the obligatory photo stop!! Haha!
Back on the boat and we headed back. Just before we got to the docks, Carter pulled the boat over and explained about the bears and how they live in the area etc and if we had any questions. It was very informative and we learned quite a bit. Especially that a bear only lives between 10-15 years in the wild, while a bear in captivity can live up to 30 years.
After arriving back on shore, we decided that we would call into a wee Swiss bakery further back up the road. It was the bakery's last day of being open before closing for a month for their holiday! They had yummy pastries, but had run out of sandwiches, (only having two left, which Cameron and Grant had), so Kelsi and I opted for the vegetable soup with pasta! What huge bowls of soup and even bigger pieces of bread and buns!! It was like what we called a doorstep piece of bread!! And plenty of butter to go with it. We decided to take our pastries 'to go' as our meals were so big we were quite full.
From here we then moved onto Mt Robson. It was a bit disappointing as you could not see the top of Mt Robson because of cloud, but it was still a spectacular view. From here we decided to walk up to Lake Kinney, which took us just over an hour to get to. We walked up hill (slight) next to a beautiful blue river/rapids that come from Lake Kinney. When we finally got to the lake, it was spectacular! The scenery never ceases to amaze us! Even Kelsi and Cameron say that every time they see mountains or lakes, it's just so breathtaking every time. We totally agree!
Here we meet a man and his daughter who had been canoeing out on the lake and were just packing up. He could not believe that us being New Zealanders would ever want to leave our country, as he said it's so beautiful there! He was really lovely and took some photos of us by the lake. Amazing how people are so friendly here too.
The walk back down was better, as it was going down hill! All told, it was about a 2.5hr walk!
We then arrived back in Jasper, where we freshened up and Cameron decided we would have poached eggs for dinner! I swear I have never seen poached eggs done the way he did! He put 8 eggs into one pot at the same time!! Haha! It worked out in the end anyway!!
It was a long day, with a bit of walking - 16,000 steps in total - 13.8km!
Tomorrow we are off down the Icefield Parkway to Banff, staying at Canmore (or Harvie Heights, just 4km north of Canmore).
