It's Wednesday, (which I had to check by the way!) and I'm slightly burnt on my face due to the wind…yet im loosing my tan and soon to be no longer brown! OMG! I know.
Im wearing jeans, socks and a god damn hoodie. Apparently I'm told I am in Egypt. Other than the large amounts of sand and numerous people covered completely in robes, I still haven't seen a pyramid or a camel. I must say Im not convinced!!
Leaving Singapore was hard…as expected say bye to Peter and Tracy. But after the wonderful time I had had with them both, I was ready to get to work and stuck into a new challenge. And by lordy I have one now!!!
After spending 6days with Tracy back in Thailand, Phuket and enjoying Koh Lanta, the beach, Patong and Chalong. We parted (teary eyed), I heading to Koh Phi Phi and T to Singapore.
I spent several days on Phi Phi, enjoying the fine company of Effie, Sam, Ben and the rest of the Island Divers crew…one crazy night out (of course!) and a days diving, a day sunbathing and evenings chilling and dancing. It was great fun and a sad moment to finally be leaving Phi Phi (Im sure ill go back one day though!)
A ferry and a cab later I ended up back in Chalong with Bob the b****** and Irish Mark at their place collecting my dive gear and being looked after with laughter and crudeness! They are the best!
And later that eve was on my flight from Phuket to Bangkok. This I can cope with!! (Just!) During my timetable I had thought I would have plenty of time to relax, eat and just catch my breath between landing at 11.30pm and my flight at 1.10am. Nope! I ended up having to cue so long to check in for my flight from Bangkok to Cairo that I didn't even manage to eat, reaching the gate at 10mins to 1am.
I was extremely hungry also very tired, and as I sat in my seat, I was suddenly hit with the realisation of a feeling of eyes staring at me from every angle; something that is a hard feeling to shake here in Egypt. There were few passengers boarding who were white. The rest dressed heavily in clothes and robes, a sight that was unfamiliar to me. I was all of a sudden very aware of myself, and decided to make myself disappear as much as possible. Hmmmm…..!
All of a sudden, after covering myself with a blanket and putting socks on, I realised there was no TV!!! You know…the tiny screen located on the back of the passengers head rest in front of you…well no there was nothing. DISPEAR!!! Now what entertainment do I have, I wondered! I had a book, but it was indeed late and I was tired, I was ready to watch a film requiring limited attention span. There was a tiny screen located in the middle of the plane; it presented an image of the run-way. I attempted to stare further, it was live feed. Now what could be more terrifying! Watching the run way as you hurdle into mid air, what happens if you crash!!! YOU WATCH IT HAPPEN!!!!!! Terror sprang to mind at that point.
Anyway, entertainment….hmmm….I had my IPod, and I have music on that and films. Hot Fuzz which ive officially watched more than 20 times, certain!! (LOVE IT!) Ratatouille, Planet Earth and Tweety and Sylvester. (The only major films missing are Pirates of the Caribbean…for eye candy purposes of course!! Snatch and perhaps a horror film…Seven, or Hannibal.) But anyway, my IPod is low on battery due to no longer possessing a laptop and therefore a means to charge it. So, abit of music it is, less battery used.
6hours later, ive eaten (the last real Thai food for a long time!), watched our plane take off!!! (Safely thankfully) and trying hard to sleep. Thankful for the fact that my next door neighbour is in fact Thai. Also curious what she is going to do in Cairo?!?
We land over 9 hours later, and im in Cairo, it's a confusing process landing in Cairo, they have odd names and different buildings for your needs…my needs are simple, I WANT TO GO TO HURGHADA. I spoke this several times, and yet I just got stared out, vaguely. Help. I ended up in a building that eventually I got told I needed to be in another to get my luggage and then proceed to another area for domestic flights. JOY! Now im on a carrier with Egyptian's, and in search of my luggage and the correct building!
I make it, and I grab my luggage, shocked at the honest advice one particular Egyptian decides to give me, shocked that I took the time to listen to the advice!!! ;) And after sorting my month's visa I make the journey to the next building! It's a risky journey and im not feeling safe…once again being stared at, and like a dog I am being encouraged/called with some sort of irritating sound to go near the slimy Egyptian men…err…..b***** off!
I have developed an option within seconds, let's hope it changes.
I arrive in the right building for my departure, and other than my thoughts regarding the men I can not stop swearing about the outside temperature. IT'S COLD!!! LIKE 18 DEGREES!!! Well it is 6.30am here, but seriously im in the desert!! WTF!???? Ive gone from 30 degrees to 18. SHOCK!!
Im in the departures for domestic and some skanky Egyptian, who is part of the security, declares I can proceed no further. I am obviously reluctant to co-operate as he produces no valid reason for the halt, it is neither to do with any of my luggage, nor my personal security, so I see no reason. And proceed to a more authoritative man at a desk. While still being demanded to stay put…He helpfully tells the security guy to b***** off (of course, that's what I would have said!) and im informed that instead of waiting around the departures area (which is small) for several hours until my 11.30am flight, I can catch the 7am flight from Cairo to Hurghada. Which was in 5minuets, let's do it! So I was on the flight quickly, and an hour later arriving at Hurghada airport and calling the only number I had for Videobubbles, Julia.
I was bothered about 5times by different and the same men, and waited about 40minuets for Julia to come from Safaga to Hurghada to collect me. During this time I was still commenting about the weather conditions.
Julia arrived and with an Egyptian guy called Medo, who was driving. Julia is German, and very smiley (even for a German!) Medo is very friendly, and soon giving me much gossip about Videobubbles, as we drive around completing jobs that they had planned to do before picking me up at 12.30 (but I was early!) It was good though, I got to see a lot of Hurghada from the car, and even though I was extremely jet lagged, some areas looked nice, others like a post war site, with run down builds and mild attempts of re-building them. Hmmm…interesting.
Ive never seen so much sand as we drive towards Safaga from Hurghada, it's seriously a lot. (Obvious I know, but still a shock!)
We are soon in Safaga, or well, the outskirts of Safaga, which means, Safaga town is about another 5minuete drive from here. On the left is the Lotus resort and tourists shops crammed together, with the same pushy Egyptian man standing outside, desperate for the tourists to emerge from their all inclusive resorts (Not going to happen!) There are also a few restaurants, and as expected all very much over priced. On the right hand side of the road, where we are heading. The is a front row of builds, a few look functioning, Egyptian Tea cafes (they love their Tea here) and a Pharmacy, and a shop that looks well equip at a brief glance.
However other than these few shops, the rest of the builds are derelict, well at least they look it. Again, post war, some re-built and some attempted to be re-built, yet not completed.
We drive behind, and the derelict buildings continue further and further out. There are random good looking builds located, everything is widely spread, some functioning and some barely functioning.
Stopping outside what I could imagine as a potential hideout…you know, like a disguise location, shabby and run down, that Police or undercover agents could hideout in and perform stakeouts for the local area. It's certainly a local area here, full of Egyptian families.
Lol. My imagination! But anyway, it looks like it could fall down. Ground level is the only complete level. The other two are half built and not well! Through a green security door allows access to the building and stairs, we enter to what is apparently Videobubbles. Well its not glam to say the least but its functioning on the inside!
I meet Sara (German), who is Massimo's (my new Boss, Italian) wife; she deals with everyone wages so im told. I also meet Tom (Dutch), a manager for the Hurghada office and the one here in Safage. Along with Phil (English). Quick meets and im soon being taken with Phil and Julia to my new home….yes that's right, not over to the luxurious Lotus Resort, instead towards to derelict builds and building site! YAY!!!! Phil and his girlfriend are my new housemates apparently. We enter a building similar to Videobubbles office, and climb a set of stairs into an apartment, the sofas are the first thing I notice, they smell like straw, or horse, I cant determine which one, either way, strong and quickly repulsive!
I meet Elin (Swedish), Phil's girlfriend. She seems nice and friendly. Phil soon departs, back to training with Tom apparently as he too is new and has been here in Safaga too for less than a week. Me and Elin are left alone, and im eager to shower and sleep, but feel I should chat a little.
The area looks scary, but i had a good view of the ocean in the distance, which by the way is amazing. It looks amazing. So bright and clear, could stare at it for hours!!! Yet...cold!
So that was me arrving pretty much, I will update very soon with much more, although due to my location it may become more of a weekly thing as i have to get transport out of the road (my home) to Safaga!!
Miss you all loads and can't wait to hear from you all xxxxxxxxxxxx
Loads of love xxxxxxx Me
