Hiya,
We have been so busy the past couple of weeks. Sorry for the lack of updates but we really have been having soooo much fun! It has been the favorite part of our travels thus far.
We left you in Magnetic island and since then we have visited Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, Krombit, 1770/Agnes Water, Hervey Bay and Fraser Island.
Firstly Airlie Beach is a party town where we caught our Maxi Sailing Yacht called the Matadore. It is famous back in the days of 1990's when it won every single race it entered before it retired undefeated! Our boat had 4 crew and 20 passengers, the food and service was superb and we helped out the crew by all mucking in raising the sails and balancing the boat with our body weight by climbing up on the high side. At times this was pretty scary as we were often at a 40degree angle! No time for sunbathing unless you wanted to chance the 'Man Over Board'!
We sailed for 3 days experience all weather conditions sleeping in quarters on the boat. Supprisingly Carly wasn't sea sick! We stopped regularly at many of the 74 islands and snorkelled on the Great Barrier reef. Paul even tried his hand at Scuba Diving and loved it so much he done 2 dives. The instructor told him off on the last day though as he was stroking a huge turtles back, apparently it was lucky the turtle was laid back as they have been known to munch off fingers! Carly mainly snorkelled at Fish World, Coral World and Turtle World and she was the 1st to spot a clown fish(Nemo). We also spotted many stingrays and a few baby sharks! We stopped and took in the beautiful beach of Whitehaven Beach. Here the sand can clean jewelery as it is 98% pure.
We were very lucky as we had a great group on the boat every one got on well and got pretty drunk together, especially on the 2nd night when it was the deck hands birthday and he made a special sangria. The Spanish girls weren't impressed though!!!
Upon arriving back to Airlie it was St Patricks night, as you can imagine it was pretty messy and we met up with the people from our boat again.
The next early morning departure was to Krombit, this is a working Cattle Farm. Carly was dreading this part but as it turns out really enjoyed herself. We arrived in the evening, we learnt to crack the whip before riding the mechanical bull. Paul got the highest score from the boys and carly did well aswell! We had our 1st roast dinner here aswell with the hugest portion of beef we have ever seen, not a patch on the home roast as the potaoes were poor!
The following morning we did clay pidgeon shooting. It was rather hilarious as Carly pulled the trigger 3 times before the clay was released in to the air! Think she was a bit excited with a gun in her arms! Paul also done goat rodeo- basically catching a goat and wrestling it to the ground before branding(pretend) it!
We stayed for 5 nights at a small town, Town of 1770/Agnes Water. It's named 1770 as this is where Captain Cook first drifted ashore. For such a small town it had so much to do. It is also a lot cheaper than the rest of Australia so we went all out, Surfing lessons, Acrobatic flight trip and a Scooteroo Tour. Must say Carly didn't do too well, (Paul was sickenly good at everything) firstly she fell off the board getting bonked on the head by her own and someone elses board put her off slightly. On the acrobatic (rollacoaster)flight she felt sick and was petrified(never seen anyone grab on to the seat so tightly) and had to be dropped off on the beach before Paul went up and done some tricks and drove the plane himself! The Scooteroo Tour consisted of driving Choppers(mini Harley Davidsons) around the surrounding areas stopping off for photo's of Kangaroos and each other. Regularly stopping for Carly(Granny Rider) to catch up aswell! We stopped to see the sunset and grab a bowl of wedges.
The next stop has been Hervey Bay, this is a ghost town, the only people who live here are the newly weds or nearly deads! People only come here to visit Fraser Island. This is the largest Sand bar in the world measuring 120km x 25km. We were on a 4x4 self drive tour with 9 other people for 3 days sleeping in tents and fending for ourselves. This so far has been the best part of our trip to date. We had a fantastic group consisting of 2 Gereman girls, 1 Canadian lad, 2 Norwegian lads and the rest English. It was really good as everyone wanted the same out of the trip and we jelled reallly well. Paul and Carly were 2 of the 4 designated drivers. We both had to drive through the bunpy rainforrest and on the cruise along the beach. We had to make the ride semi comprotable for the passengers while pushing the car to get maximum enjoyment. Can you believe Carly driving a huge 4x4 on a beach with 10 passengers at 85k/h?? She was loving it and done really well. The Norwegian on the other hand loved it but the passengers weren't in agreement as he went hurtling down the beach not seeing the bumps and at times we went airbourne!
We stopped regularly at beautiful lakes, shipwrecks, sand dunes, creeks and look out points. We also saw some Dingos and Huge lizards called Guana's. It was fantastic, beautiful and like nothing we have ever seen before. As with all our photo's again it doesn't do it justice!
We are now nackered! Were off to relax for a few days.
Love
Carly & Paul
