Gooday from the wonderful Aussie land!
Our ozzy journey has now started! Arrived in Cairns on the 6th March, unfortunately we were also greated by the rain! We were extreemely pleased to be greeted by english speaking people who weren't trying to sell us something or hassle us as we have had 6 weeks of this in Asia. Everyone here is so friendly and cheerful. We have met some wonderful people already, its really good as everyone is constantly sharing their experiences so far.
First couple of nights we stayed in Cairns, the first night we partied with some fellow travellers in a place called Rhinos, it was an all you can drink for $20. Towards the end of the night Carly was found asleep sitting on the stage. She was pretty drunk! Our days here were spent lazing around the lagoon- as the beach is a non swimming beach everyone goes here.
We hired a car for a couple of days(the slowest & ugliest car in the world) and drove up to Cape Tribulation, It took a few hours but was well worth it as this is the part of Oz where the rainforrest meets the Great Barrier Reef. We met up with 2 guys we met in Cairns, Eric(Sweedish) and Charlie. That day we checked out the scenery, went swimming in a fresh water hole(croc free) & had a party night at the hostel which was messy before upsetting the rest of our room mates with our drunkern antics!
The following afternoon we headed to Port Douglas, this was a nice little town. On route we stopped for a spot of crocodile spotting along the Daintree River, cruising along in a solar powered boat. We saw 3 small crocodiles and the head of a larger one, most were in the water as it was raining at the time.
We have now joined up with the oz experience bus, we left fom Cairns and stopped at a crocodile farm for a few hours, this was pretty mad as we were greeted by a dog with a glass eye and a Steve Irwin esc man with a crocodile stuffed up his shirt! He showed us round the farm where they breed crocs for the meat and skin and they keep captured ones for the eggs. We met George, he is one of the bigest in captivity at over 5m long! In the farm was also Kangaroos, alligators, snakes, lizards, birds and the extinct Cassowary. Paul even held a baby croc and had a snake round his neck!
We then boarded the bus for a few more hours and a ferry to Magnetic Island. A small chilled out island off the coast of Townsville. Here has over 320 sunny days a year and don't we know it, it has been asolutely boiling!
Pauls hair was getting a bit long so borrowed a friends clippers. As we stared doing the sieds it looked fine, however once the top was done it beacame clear that we should have used a longer grade! Paul looks like and english hooligan! Not to worry- it grows so quickly anyway!
Today we met up with Charlie again and caught a bus to the other end of the island and done some snorkelling. It's stinger season in Queensland at the moment so you are advised to wear a stinger suit or only swim in netted off areas as these jelly fish can kill. We didn't see any thankfully. However we did manage to see some lovely coral reef beautiful fish and Stingrays. No- we didn't try grabbing them like Mr Irwin! One was massive about 2ft wide and the tail was about 6ft long! They are really nice and they just glide through the water. Paul loved it!
This evening Paul went for a round of golf with some others, they were dissapointed as they were too late too tee off. Who would play in this heat before 5o'clock!?
We have been cooking for ourselves most of the time here to save money and try to reduce Pauls bellie! We've also had some kangaroo! It's lovely- similar to beef but better! Paul also done a spot of work with some of the other lads, moving some crates of beer, it only took 5 minutes and was rewarded with free cocktails all night!
We have met up with loads of people who are travelling up the east coast(were going down) and they have been giving us loads of advice and keep telling us that the best is yet to come! We can't wait! It's wicked, were having such a great time and absolutely loving Australia so far!
Hope everyone is well & not missing us too much.
love to all
Carly & Paul
