Took the ferry from Wellington in the North Island to Picton in the South Island. It started off as a beautiful sunny afternoon with great scenery, but during the 3 hour crossing the weather turned so that by the end the waves were crashing over the boat and you could not see more than a few yards in front of you. Arrived in the sleepy village of Picton which really is only there as a port between North and South Islands. Not much to do in the town but I headed out in the evening to see if there was anything interesting afoot. Walked past 3 bars in the town and there must have been a grand total of 4 people between them. I knew there was no one else in the hostel where I was staying so decided to pop in one of the bars to see if I could meet any interesting people.
It was a case of 3 locals sat at the bar when I walked in. Within 5 minutes of stepping foot in the door I had been personally introduced to each of them, and the bar staff...a few minutes later a few more ex travellers who had decided to stay in Picton arrived and one of them offered me his car for the rest of my trip around New Zealand. Everyone who came in headed straight over to speak to the non local, it was great! I ended up having a really good night and picked up loads of information about where to go and what to do over the next couple of weeks.
Tomorrow will be over to Nelson...have decided to travel off my own steam for a while just using the national bus service. I have enjoyed the tour busses and met some cool people but I will see what the independent travelling is like.
