Travelled down the West coast of South Island through Greymouth (very forgettable) through to the Glaciers. Stayed at Franz Joseph which is one of only three areas in the world where glaciers meet rain forest. Had a fantastic 8 hour trek of the Glacier. We got decked out in ice boots and waterproofs and then it was off to the huge river of ice. It was a real experience, we were climbing up and down sheer faces of ice about 30 metres high. The guide would cut steps into the ice with an axe and would often set up a couple of chords to guide us. Some of the drops were pretty scary and one of them I lost my footing and was left hanging on to the chord and swinging over a 20 foot drop...Fortunatly my grip held me up until I managed to find my footing again...By the end we were all pretty knackered but it was a great experience. Next stop is Queenstown where we are hoping to skydive (for the third time of asking)...fingers crossed
