Arrived in Tokyo after a nice easy flight...slept most of the time as I was seriously hung over from night befores leaving cocktails!
Note to anyone else having a get together the night before a trip abroad...make sure you have started your packing before you go out...If not, make sure you have a really good mate on hand to help you out...I would have been in a right mess if it had been all left to me...Cheers KL!!
The biggest thing I have noticed up to now is the noise...you can not get away from it. Only been in the city up to now but there is just no peace and quiet...At the train stations there are constant (and I do mean constant) announcements. In the streets there is music / spoken adverts etc from the shops and there is an ever present high pitched sqealing / laughter from the masses of school girl dressed women. Looks like the miniskirt has either gone through a revival in Japan, or mosty likely never fallen out of favour!! I have the benefit of switching the hearing aids down and just watching the world go by...Ahhh the joys of being deaf, there is a lot to be said for it!!
Shinjuku as really vibrant with hundreds of bars, eating places, strip joints (apparently), arcades etc. The arcades are amazing...literally hundreds of people sat transfixed by strange little videos playing on the screens while they pile small ball bearings in...which I assume is the payment. I had a go and have to admit I have absolutely no idea what it is all about!! Was I paying to watch the video, was I gambling, your guess is as good as mine...
Went for a walk about last night and it is pretty hectic. Found some amazing little streets lined with dozens of tiny bars. Each is just a front door off a back street, has enough room for about 10 people and many will only let locals in. Will see if I can pass as a local tonight!
