We jumped on a bus for 3 hours from our hostel to Halong Bay. When there we boarded our 6 man boat; Baitulong Junk with 3 guys from the hostel, Pete, Gary and Ben who were top blokes and headed to the bay.
Now I thought Angkor Wat was a sight but Halong Bay is like stepping into another world or Jurassic Park. They say if you visit Vietnam and don't see Halong Bay you haven't visited Vietnam and it is true. Words and photographs do not do the place justice. I ran out of words to describe the small percentage of the 2000 islands we saw. Beautiful amazing and incredible were just repeated over and over again. On the first day we saw a cave in one of the islands went to a beach for some relaxing. We went back to the boat for some dinner and played poker on deck through the night using Ritz crackers for chips. Ben on the other hand flirted with every girl that roded up to the boat to try and sell us food and drink.
The next morning I woke to the most amazing sight i've ever seen; tens of picturesque boats anchored in the bay with a flock of hawks flying overhead and swooping down every now and again to catch a fish. During the morning we kayaked around the islands which was like something out of Lord Of The Rings and stopped for lunch and diving off the boat at midday. After lunch we did some more kayaking. We explored some caves and found a lagoon which the most peaceful place on earth, we didn't see any monkeys which are meant to live there though which was disappointing. In the evening we enjoyed dinner on deck and took part in a spot of squid fishing. Kieran and Pete managed to catch one but I wasn't as successful. All I managed to do was catch a dead fish and have a cockroach sip my beer.
The next morning we had some breakfast and took a small boat to a cave and returned to the harbour. Once back at the hostel we booked 3 more nights and relaxed for a bit. During the evening we went to the lake for some food and Fanny ice cream.
