I ended up staying in Noosa for 6 nights in total, partly because it was a really nice area and also because friends from Fraser Island were there. Noosa is a beach resort located just over 100km north of Brisbane. It is divided into various areas such as Noosa Junction, Noosaville and Noosa Heads. The Noosa River meanders inland towards the sea cutting up the terrain and creating various islands on the way. On these islands live Queensland’s wealthy in their riverside apartments and boathouses, it was more reminiscent of Miami than an Australian town.
My first bit of business in Noosa was to visit Australia Zoo, life’s work of the late, great, crocodile hunter Steve Irwin. As well as watching the Wildlife Warrior Show at the Corcoseum I managed to see elephants, tigers and my first ‘live’ kangaroos. The only problem with the day was the humidity that I had so far managed to avoid made sure I wouldn’t get to New South Wales without experiencing it. Man, it was hot! Apparently it soared up to 40’C, not the best weather for walking around a zoo. The weather also caused a thunderstorm that evening which we watched from jetty at the end of the road which was very cool.
My other days in Noosa were spent either on the beach or on a kayak on the river. One day Jane (a girl I had met the previous week) and I went for a walk in Noosa National Park. In an extremely pleasant trip we followed the coastal path past Witches Cauldron and Granite Bay. Here we saw a school of 8 dolphins paddling merrily in the sea. The pictures of what appear to be just the sea do contain dolphin fins and tails if you look closely. We then stuck to the path up to Hells Gate and stopped at Alexandria Beach for lunch. Here we sat and listened to the waves caressing the shore. We opened our ham and tomato sandwiches which we had made that morning and were about to tuck into them when we noticed a gentleman walking along the beach in our direction. The man in question seemed to be wearing skin coloured swimming shorts, then as he neared he appeared to have something poking out of his skin coloured swimming shorts. A few more steps shocked us into the realisation that we had stumbled upon a nudist beach. You’ll be happy to know that it didn’t ruin our appetites and our sandwiches were delicious.
