Everyone I had spoke to before arriving in Brisbane did not have a good word to say about it. Whether they stayed too long, not long enough or were comparing it to Sydney and Melbourne, the criticism I felt was totally unfair. I really enjoyed my time in ‘Brissie’ and it was nice to be in a city for a change rather than a coastal town. During my week in Queensland’s capital I was kept busy. Whether relaxing on Street’s Beach on South Bank, where I saw a great cocktail juggler, strolling around the Botanic Gardens or being a culture vulture by visiting the museum or art gallery, I was never bored.
The cricket was also on while I was there. Australia hosted the West Indies for the first test of a three test series at The Gabba so I went along to the second day. Thankfully Chris Gayle returned to Oz after his sick mother recovered but Sarwan unfortunately missed out through a last minute injury. After watching North and Hauritz take part in some batting practice I made my way inside the stadium. Australia had a fairly easy time of it, declaring on 480 and having the West Indies at 48-4 when I left. Gayle did manage 5 fours in his innings which I was happy to witness. It was the first time I had been to watch the cricket and I really enjoyed it. Being by myself sucked a bit but going with a gang of lads would be a great day out.
While in Brisbane I also met Matty. It was great to see someone from back home and so strange to have a night out with him halfway around the world. After a somewhat heavy session we staggered to Central Station so he and his cousin Tom could catch the first train back to Cleveland. As I continued my walk up Ann Street I was stopped in my tracks by the sun rising behind Story Bridge.
