Day 17
A full day tour of wild, mysterious Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, with Fraser Explorer Tours in their big 4 wheel drive bus. Across the Great Sandy Strait by barge and then a bouncing ride on sand tracks through ancient rainforest, stopping at Wanggoolba Creek. Many huge kauri, hoop pine, blackbutt, turpentine and brush box trees growing in sand, as well as rare king ferns and picabeen palms growing in the sandy creek. Then onto perched dune freshwater Lake McKenzie for a swim and then Eurong Beach Resort for buffet lunch. Along 75 Mile Beach driving fast on the sand to the rusted Maheno shipwreck and Pinnacles coloured sands. We jumped into a single engine aircraft and took off on the beach for a short flight over the island - scary but spectacular seeing the huge sand drifts and perched lakes. Landed at Eli Creek for a paddle, then by bus over the rainforest range to the barge. Saw some wild dingoes and more whales. Dinner tonight crumbed chicken breast with garlic cheese stuffing. A fantastic day!
