Now sitting at luang Prabang airport having checked in for my 10.30 flight to siem reap, Cambodia.
Today is cloudy here in LPB, but I'm sure it will soon lift.
Had a bit of a dental crisis last night. A capped tooth worked a bit loose on a spring roll and didn't really survive supper. Unfortunately it's in a rather obvious position and Cambodia is not the best place to get emergency dental repairs done so I'm not sure whether I will need to change my plans and stay in Bangkok or in fact cut short my trip and head home. It's a shame it had to happen now as it is putting a real downer on things even though it's temporarily stuck back in with a piece of chewing gum.
The Vietnam airways flight is in a small Fokker 70, seating 78 people, it's fairly full today. There is short walk to the plane from the terminal building and the small jet is soon boarded, doors are closed and fifteen minutes ahead of schedule we taxi out to the runway. This is the largest plane that can land here, most of the flights are on turbo-props because of the short runway, however, the Chinese government have given money to enlarge the airport and the new runway is under construction just beyond the existing one. This will allow jets, airbuses and the like to start fly to luang.
Arriving in siem reap ahead of schedule at 11.30 I was off the place like a shot (lucky to be in row 2) to get in line for the visa on arrival. I usually do an e-visa but my new passport needs one as a souvenir. The process is pretty quick these days and I was through in 10 minutes and still had to wait for the bag. Straight out and Soriya and David were waiting with broad smiles, so nice to get that sort of welcome. We headed off to David's taxi and drove off into town. There have been a lot of changes in the past year, the road in has been upgraded and widened and new malls and shops abound. Also the main street that was so bad last year has been resurfaced at last.
This afternoon was spent wandering and getting money and the at the hotel sorting laundry. I'd arranged to meet David and Soriya at 6.30 to go out for something to eat. Freed from the usual dietary requirements, we head out to a kymer place past national route 6. It's the kind of place with beer girls and bad karaoke... But the food's ok and David and Soriya seem to love it. Lots of flirting with the beer girls etc. I ate what they ordered which was fish amok, stir fried seafood it a Khmer curry broth and sweet chilli chicken... and plenty of Angkor beer to wash it down. A nice evening.
PS... Today I discovered the one thousand and second use for superglue!
