So the final day in Chiang Mai arrives all too quickly, has it really been 5 days that I have been here? The time has flown by just enjoying the city and the Loy Krathong festival. Packed up and ready to go, I head off to the airport, which is just a few minutes from the centre and check in for my Lao Airways flight to Luang Prabang in Laos.
The plane leaves at 3pm, not full today and I have two seats to myself, the plane has a mix of Lao people, backpackers, a large American family and some Thais and we quickly climb up off the runway and bank sharply over the north of Chiang Mai getting a great arial view of the city. Then climbing high into the clouds and over sparsly populated hills and valleys on our way to Laos. This short flight takes just one hour and I soon see the mighty Mekong river down below as we start our descent. Mount Phousi passes on my left and we touch down at the small airport of Luang Prabang.
Off the plane and walk to the terminal building to stand in line for the Visa on Arrival. Ten minutes and $35 later, I have a bright, shiny visa in my passport and I walk out into the late afternoon sun. Smoke drifts though the warm air as I head into town. It all looks the same as the last time I was here, three years ago. there is more building around the airport and there seems to be more cars on the road, a trend everywhere I think, soon arriving at my small guesthouse, Thatsaphone Villa right in the centre of town, it feels good to be back.
After settling in, I head into the main street, Sisavangvong road, to find a cash point. Soon located I take out 1,000000 Kip, about £80 and wander about the town feeling good to be a millionaire. Everywhere in this small town you stumble across venerable old Wats with monks chanting the evening prayers inside, it's so charming.
After supper on the Nahm Khan riverside I head back to bed. Things shut early here and by 10.30 everyone has closed up shop.
