Hey everyone,
I am in Puno, Peru at the moment! did a 6 hour bus journey from Arequipa earlier today then checked into a hostel. We are grounded here until 1st May because there is a bus strike going on so we can´t cross the border into Bolivia until then! Kat has broken her foot, but we managed to get her to a doctor and her foots now in a cast so shes a bit of an invalid at the moment!
After the Inca Trail, we stayed a couple of nights in Cusco to recover properly, with Steph and Sally having a rather messy night out! We then got a long bus journey back to the coast to a place called Ica. Its a city in the middle of the desert and we stayed at a nearby oasis town called Huacachina. It was amazing, massive Sahara-like sand dunes surrounding this little town which is built around an oasis. We went sandboarding (like snowboarding but on sand dunes!) and got a dune buggy ride over the sand dunes. Got some awesome pics! Such a surreal landscape. Sandboarding was great fun, for only 35 soles which is around 6 pounds! Managed to get the hang of it in the end, and went down some massive steep dunes. The next day was when Kat broke her foot, by jumping into a swimming pool - silly girl! I forget to mention that it was me cajoling her to jump in the first place. Felt a little guilty! Me, Sally and Steph all went sandboarding a second time, then later that day got an overnight bus to Arequipa. There, we decided to do a day tour to Colca Canyon, the deepest canyon in the world, and twice the size of the Grand Canyon. It was an early start at 2am, but worth it as the views were amazing! We also stopped off at a viewpoint where you could see the ´Valley of the Volcanos´. Awesome views again, barren desert land then massive volcanoes and mountains in the distance.
When we got back to Arequipa, I decided to buy an acoustic guitar! its a 3/4 size guitar, but it plays fine and only cost about 30quid with the case too! Managed to buy a South American style case, hand woven in the Peruvian style its great! only a fiver too. Everything is so cheap here its amazing! Then we got the bus to Puno (interesting bus journey!), which is where I am now! Off to the floating straw islands on Lake Titicaca tomorrow, doing a night stay there with a traditional peruvian family so that should be interesting! Then hopefully we can cross the border into Bolivia!
Thats all for now,
Paul
