Sailing from Puerto Montt to Puerto Chacabuco 11am - 11am
Ok so I may have described this as a mini cruise but I guess I was fluffing it up a bit. Sorry Susan. (turns out a lot). It's a ferry. A big ugly car and lorry ferry. Not a thing fluffy about it. Come on, I'm meant to be on a budget remember! So I got there at 630 as arranged. After 10 mins we were all driven in a minibus 30 mins away to the other side of the port. There was MILLIONS of luggage! Plants, boxes, TV and even a mountain bike shoved up the isle (ooh err missus). We got on the, um, ferry, were showed our rooms (I was sharing with another 2 girls. one of whom spoke very good English) and the usual safety briefing, of which I understood nada (nothing...yey I'm thinking in Spanish now!!!) cos the whole thing was in Spanish, then left to our own devices until the ferry left at ELEVEN O CLOCK!!!!!! This REALLY pissed me off! Why the hell did I get dragged out my bed at 545 to then be sitting around for 4 whole hours??? I could have still been sleeping! And I could have gone to bed in the ferry had I known what the whole day had in store for me.
I had read reviews and forums about this trip and it sounded great. Sailing through the Patagonian Fiords - beautiful scenery - mountains - wildlife - dolphins (ok so I saw dolphins. That was pretty spectacular, riding the wake, wake? that's at the back right? What are the waves at the front called?) but you get the picture right?
What actually DID happen was (apart from the dolphins) sea. Nothing but sea, the whole day. Sea to my left. Sea to my right. I wondered where all the passengers were all day while I was the only one outside freezing my boobs off trying to catch a glimpse of this gorgeous scenery. THEY WERE ALL INSIDE SLEEPING!!!! This trip is nothing but a means to get from A to B. I should have just got back on my bus bed!
You should know, it wasn't altogether horrible. My room mate and I pretty much hung out all day and were the only ones hard enough to brave the freezing cold. We chatted on and off and sat next to each other (closer than what would be classed as my usual close personal space, or "bubble", but the wind and freezing temperature put an end to all that jargon). She's lovely but I'm ashamed to say her name was so complicated I failed to remember it :(
Have a look at Patagonia. It's all tiny islands etc down there. I thought we'd be sailing really close to and through all these islands. Ok yes I saw land on either side but MILES away!!
Ok so I need something good to happen. So far, failed hill climb, failed poker game, failed winning of karaoke competition, failed Patagonia sailing trip!
OMG My wish has come true! I woke up with the sun rising at 7am, looked out the window and there it was! The Scenery. What the people were talking about. The tiny islands lit up with the morning sun. Vast mountains covered in snow, so close it looks like I can touch them. Check out the pics. That's all I can say. Then add a few drops of your own imagination to get the REAL picture.
