Long Way To NZ
Morocco: 21st - 26th March 2006
What a place to start travels in. A serious culture shock! Catch the ferry from Algeciras in Spain and in just over 2 hours you reach Tangiers. Immediately you are hastled by numorous taxi drivers trying to get you business. Walking along the streets every local, with little exception, kept staring at me. Have they never seen a blonde white boy before? This takes some getting used to but after a day or two you realise you are quite safe.
Marrakesh is a lot more touristy and definately more welcoming. The main market square "Djembaa El Fna" is great fun, definately worth a visit. Once you find it that is. Marrakesh is a maze of narrow streets, that once you get stuck in them your only hope of getting out is by paying a Moroccon Kid to guide you out.
By day the main market square consists of carpets, spices, lanterns, carved wood and anything tacky. The square is full of people grabbing your hand trying to get you to pay for photos with snakes (I gave in to this but the guy wanted 200Dh - nearly 15quid - I gave him 10Dh and broke free - tight b****** I know), monkees, water men, having your arm tattood with some ink stuff (dont know why but Hannah was forced into it). Every other Moroccon seems to be selling cakes (good job too, they were nice).
By night the market becomes a sea of food stalls. Their main delicacy being roasted sheeps heads and brains. I was tempted by the brain but opted for the brochettes and cous-cous instead.
I would recommend Marrakesh to anyone but 4 days there was plenty for me.
