24th May 2006 - Day 54
Picked up the camper and set off to check out some of the outskirts of Darwin. Went to Cullen Bay to see the fancy yachts and harbour side houses. M&D you should start looking for a place down under like one of these harbour side places. Headed up the coast and went to Darwin's museum and saw Sweetheart the croc - he's stuffed and about 5.5m long - a monster!! Also some Aboriginal art and display of cyclone Tracy which literally wiped out Darwin in the 70s. Camped at Lee Point for the night.
25th May 2006 - Day 55
Went up to the tip of Darwin, Lee Point to as far north we could get in our 2WD camper and saw the Indian Ocean from the other side and looked back to where we'd come from. Beach was fantastic, blue skies, empty sands etc. Headed to Litchfield park where we took in the waterfalls, HUGE termite mounds and waterholes. Took a splash in Florence Falls and Buley Waterholes. Camped at Wangi Falls, an even bigger falls - no swimming there though there was a croc scare!!
26th May 2006 - Day 56
Set off to Katherine, down the Stuart Highway stopped at Tolmer Falls in Litchfield on the way out of the Park. Bought some supplies in Katherine (Steak and Tatties), and headed to Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge to camp. Scenery was pretty fantastic, red dust and long straight highways. 250 Kms today.
27th May 2006 - Day 57
Decided to go for a bush walk today along the Nitmiluk gorge. Took the Windolf walk to the Southern rockholes up stream of our campsite. It was extremely hot in the region of 45 degrees. Katherine gorge was spectacular - any aussie travels should include a visit. Took a refreshing visit to the waterhole and walked down to the gorge below, Got back with sore feet and headeD on to Mataranka further south, as we pulled in to the camp we saw our first Roo of the trip! or three actually! Only little wallabies maybe but roos at least!
28th May 2006 - Day 58
Hit the road after a dip in the thermal waters of Bitter Springs just a 5 minute walk from our camp. Blue water like bath water, but a little smelly. (sulphur!). Headed of southwards, stopped at Daly Waters Pub for beer, and posted our passport photos to the wall which added to the strange decor of photos, foreign currency and national flags, pants, knickers, and old t-shirts. Got to Stuart memorial - a free roadside rest stop for the night, Daily mileage - 514 Km.
29th May 2006 Day 59
Hit the road at 8.30 (early for us) to head south to Alice Springs, made good progress, through Tennant Creek (not much there) stopped at the Devil's Marbles (interesting rocks!) and headed south. Reached Alice and camped up for the night. 600Km today!!!
