15th May 2006 - Day 45
Decided to head to Central HK to do some sightseeing and mooching about. Saw the Foster's HSBC Headquarters which was cool, I never knew it had a banking office in the middle of the atrium. Then later we went to Causeway Bay to check out the neon lights of the shopping district, didnt buy much though, just some shorts for Rach. Also tried out the old tram down through HK island, and met some Americans just come from Beijing. The evening we went up to Victoria Peak on the tram, which was pretty damn steep. Rach was scared the big wuss!! Saw the city as it got dark and got some cool photos of the cityscape.
16th May 2006 - Day 46
Went to the Mainland and saw a bit of Kowloon. The waterfront, Nathan Road (known as the Golden Mile) and on to Mongkok. Tasted our first Dim Sum Lunch today in Kowloon very good - much better than some of the cheap chain restaurants we've tried!!
Went to cinema in the evening and saw Mission Impossible 3 which was a break from the bright lights of Hong Kong (Tom was in Shanghai this time - and it was much better than no.2)
17th May 2006 - Day 47
Decided to go to the island of Lantau, even though the weather was ominous (a typhoon was brewing over the South China sea - and it was a level 3 storm warning) Anyway so we got a little wet and blown about! 'Saw' the big buddha sort of! well the outline though the rain and cloud, and the Po Lin Monastery as it carried on chucking it down. Went back to Kowloon after, and saw the Rothko exhibition for 15 mins at the Gallery of Modern Art, and then caught the star ferry back to Hong Kong Island. Wednesday night is race night at Happy Valley - so of course had to go and see what is like. Put a few dollars on the horses - our strategy was if we liked the sound of their name then they were good enough - this is obviously not the way to win - we lost, every time!!! The stadium itself is quite impressive and the atmosphere is pretty buzzing!!!
18th May 2006 - Day 48
Set off to Ocean Park on the South side of the island today. Its a theme park, cum zoo, cum educational park. Rides, dolphins, aquariums and two of Hong Kong's Pandas - Na Na and Jia Jia. Spent the day there, the dolphin show was cool as was the aquarium and the cable car across the hillside between the two halves of the park. The pandas were out and active, one more than the other, the female was lazing around as usual and the male just eating (for 80% of its waking hours apparently).
