Hello again,
Well, as we've now moved on from Asia we thought we'd update you on what we got up to during our last few days in the wonderful Malaysia.
After arriving at Melaka Central bus station we managed to locate a local bus which stopped just outside our hostel...perfect! The hostel was really good, although strictly Muslim so no shoes inside, no alcohol and definitely no non-halal foods....strange but the place felt quite homely.
After sorting out our room (and washing...desperately needed!) we headed for lunch which during Ramadan (apologies for spelling, I'm sure it's wrong), is not as easy as it sounds. After that we decided to head for the shopping centre, leaving the old town until the next day. Here we went for a much needed coffee (a strange type of white coffee, different to what we're used to at home in the way it's brewed or something...very nice tho). The evening was spent at the 'night market' which it has to be said was slightly less hustly and bustly that in KL! After that we just chilled with a couple of the othewr guests on the roof 'garden' of the hostel before heading to bed.
The next day was spent walking around the old town (an activity that could basically be completed in about 2 hours!). We managed to see ST Paul's Church on the hill, the Dutch Graveyard, the People's Museum and a replica of the Sultan's house all in the space of a couple of hours. Not really a huge town but reall friendly. We then made our way to Chinatown and had a snack of their local speciality of rice balls with chicken. Deliscious!
After this we headed to a few of the tamples around the area and finished in Little India with another banana leaf lunch. Must say, the food in this place really was excellent. The afternoon was spent relaxing at the hostel and shopping centre (yep, another coffee for the addict hehe), followed by another dinner at the food stalls.
So folks, that was basically Melaka. Short and sweet. Will try to update you on Singapore and Cairns as soon as possible.
Take care and look forward to hearing from you soon,
Paul and Mette x
