Hello again,
Well, we are now in KL so thought we'd update you on what we've been up to so far.
The afternoon we arrived we managed to find a bus to the hostel we'd picked out in our guide book. What can I say about this place, it was the bare essentials...a room with beds (no sheets!), a small bathroom, no hot water and just a few ants crawling around. So all in all, not too bad. Have to say though, what made this place was the friendliness of tha staff. They really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and helped us out with stuff to see etc so really a great place in that respect.
So, after a shower and small rest we headed to the night market which was actually right around the corner from our hostel. It was really funny walking around and being asked if we wanted fake watches/bags/clothes every 5 seconds. We didn't buy anything, just walked around and found the food court where we had the most amazing noodles, dumplings and fresh fruit juices. And the best part, I think it all came to the equivalent of about 2 pounds! Still can't get used to the prices out here but sure we'll feel it once we get to Oz. Anyways the night was finished off with a drink and a game of pool at the reggae bar next door. Very cool place!
The next day we got up really early and actually saw the whole city! We headed to KLCC (patronas towers) first. Have to say there are no words to describe them, they're amazing and even more so at night we fgound out. The shoppinbg there rivals London and it's all brand names and at a fraction of the price back home...was quite proud I managed to resist hehe. After that we then headed to KL tower to see the view of the whole city, followed by a trip to the Golden triangle, the main shoppping area of KL I believe. It was just lined with shopping malls which made it painful as we still have a weight limit for our backpacks to consider :o( On the way we manage to find a really cool restaurant which served the traditional Indian/malay banana leaf lunch. Curry, popadoms etc all served in a banana leaf...amazing! In the afternoon we headed back towards Chinatown where we've been staying and wandered over to see a load of their old buildings including the old railway station and Merdeka Square. That evening we managed to meet up with my old school friend living out here who I hadn;'t seen in years. It was fantastic seeing here again and her and her boyfriend took us for the most amazing meal at local food stalls.
The following day we headed to the Batu Caves, a hindu 'temple' inside the rocks. It was really cool seeing them but unfortunately we didn't have the right clothing to go on the 'adventure' trip inside the dark caves. That will have to wait until next time. After a long wait for the bus backl we went for another indian lunch in Little India, followed by a quick trip to the lake gardens. That evening we again met up with my friend but this time we went for an indian meal outside of KL where she lives. This was probably one of the best indians I've had and again it was served in a banana leaf with just makes it taste even better. After dinner she took us to a bar/club in KL so was really good to see the proper nightlife too.
Yesterday we then visited the butterfly park and the bird park where I played Doctor Dolittle, having both butterflies land on me as well as having pictures taken with a couple of the birds at the park. After picking up lunch in the market we headed on what turned out to be a private tour to the fireflies in the national park not too far from KL. OUt guide was really good and provided a running commentary of everything we passed. Before the fireflies we went to feed monkeys (v cheeky I have to say!) at a lighthouse and had the most amazing seafood dinner on the lake, all included in our tour. Once we got back to KL we took a quick final trip to the night market and then off home to pack.
We're noq off to Melaka for a couple of days followed by Singapore and headeng to Oz on 20th Spet.
Have fun all and we'll keep you posted on our next moves.
Bye!
Mette and Paul
