Good Hey All!
Firstly, we apologise for falling slightly behind with our journal updates. It's been really difficult with the campervan as the majority of camp sites do not have internet access.
Anyway, were having a ball of a time. However things are moving far to fast for our liking. Just as were beginning to really enjoy Oz, were leaving. You really do need a good 3 months here to really appreciate what Oz has to offer. 3.5 weeks is too much of a rush. We have hardly had time to relax and appreciate everything, however it hasn't stopped us from enjoying everything.
Photos should hopefully be filtered onto the site within the next week, loads of them dating back to Thailand, so keep a watchfull eye out.
Were currently in Port Douglas, just north of Cairns, which is where we fly out of on the 18th March so not long left. The drive here along the Captain Cook Highway was breathtaking, it really was. The Gold Coast & Great Barrier Reef area, including the Whitsundays are just amazing, beauty in abundance. It has become increasing humid the further north we have gone. Queensland has been so sticky at night, almost unbarable at times as you stick to the sheets. Al not very happy at all, however to be fair, Alanna has really ajusted to the camping lifestyle. She's enjoyed it so much so that weve only gone and booked another campervan for New Zealand too, which should be fantastic.
For us it's most certainly been the best way to see Oz. I mean your free to do what you want when you want too. There's no waiting around for others etc, however I guess it can be quite anti-social at times. Saying that though weve met loads of really nice people within the campsites whom just like us are doing exactly the same if not a slightly different route across Oz.
Paul managed to scuba dive within the Great Barrier Reef when we took a boat trip to Whithaven Beach, when in Airlie Beach. The beach was mind-blowing!. We both agreed that neither of us had seen anything like it before. As for scuba diving, it weren't too bad. Visibility was only 8-10 metres and much of this reef had been destroyed. Weren't down there long enough for my liking and would have prefered to have been let loose but health and safety permits that you stay very close to your dive master. I guess given the huge sharks that swim in these oceans, not to mention all the other venomous marine life here one should take care. Hopefully, looking to dive with sharks and take out a PADI Diving Course in Fuji. Alanna prefers to relax on board the boat, chatting away to all and anyone.
Watch out for them greedy pesky possums that roams the camp sites at night. Whilst in Airlie Beach, we nightly feed the possums that hung from the trees, youv'e all seem Ice Age 2. You know the two possums with the Mamouth. Well, one night the little s***s clawed Al seeking more food and one bit my toe, which Alanna found quite funny until she saw the blood all over my sandle (thongs) as the Oz's call them. Luckily, they don't carry any rabbies, just don't brush their teeth, which could lead to infection.
Managed to stop off at the Famous Australian Zoo, home of the belated Steve Irwin. We had a right good day. Hand fed Kangaroo's, touched a crocodile, koala, hairy nosed wombat (loved the little sod) and many other little criters. Really good experience. Struggled to get us both back out of the park though. The staff thought a pair of monkeys were escaping at first, before realising that they don't actually keep monkeys here in captivity.
Whilst travelling the East Coast, we stopped over at many smaller towns, most very peaceful, some that looked like one of those horror films, however we stopped in a little place called Bundaberg, north of Sydney. Well, here in Oz Bundaberg or Bundy to locals is famous for their Bundaberg Rum. We decided to visit the Bundaberg Distillery one day and had a fantastic day as we were shown their production proceedures and were even able to sample two drinks each. Since that day we crave Bundy every day. Al's gone mad for Bundy and Coke, which they have on tap here. May have to sneak a cheeky bottle home ha!
Weather still no the best. Apparently, it's Aurtum here in Oz. Still 29 degrees most days, however very overcast with daily tropical showers. Oh well, were just happy to be here in Oz.
Campervan goes back tomorrow and we finish Oz with two days in a hostel in Cairns. Last night we celebrate Paddy's day, which should be fun.
Keep leaving those messages as each one is really appreciated.
For now, see you later guys!
