The last couple of days have been quite something. The pub in Barrytown was the spot for a major drunk for these young people the first night, and a crazy dress up party the second. My full day at the knife-making place yesterday was absolutely s wonderful day. Yes, I made a knife for Rowley, but the hosts were two wonderful Kiwi's who made us feel welcome and relaxed. There were only two of us from the Stray bus, the young female bartender from Barrytown, and 4 young Aussie guys who are finishing a snowboarding holiday. We had a great day together, and I believe that if I lived here, Steven and Robyn would be good friends. Robyn has horses, they have dogs, chickens, parakeets and cats. Think of a friend like Anne Fawcett for those who know her and you get a picture of Robyn. Steven could be a slightly younger version of Cy Steele, and just as humourous. I wanted advice in designing my knife, and he wasn't giving it to me. So I said "be my husband for a minute and tell me what kind of knife you would like. He said "Do you hear what she just said guys?" I told him that I only wanted him to be my husband until he answered my question. Our short term relationship became the joke of the day. He then wanted to know Rowley's name because he had such an affinity for him - when things weren't perfect, he would insist that I fix them so that Rowley could get a good knife!!!
We finished our day by celebrating with a glass of their moonshine. We went back to the hostel for a chicken dinner, and then a party with everyone cross-dressing. I put on a tie and whiskers on my face. The highlight of the night was the guy in the camisole and skirt with the back of the skirt missing and he was wearing a thong. If I could, I would send a picture of that sight!!!
Today we have travelled a lot. I walked on the beach before we left Barrytown - that was after I figured out how to break into the room of my four young Aussie friends who locked them selves out and were getting way behind in a departure for the airport in Christchurch. I found a ladder and three of us braced it while the smallest guy went up, climbed from the ladder across a tree and into the room. Sometimes you figure out the value of a little experience and some problem solving skills.
We stopped at a beautiful lake, a Bushman's Museum ( where I was the only on brave enough to hand feed the pig) and then we arrived at Franz Joseph Glacier. We got our passes for tomorrow - I am going to do the half day hike. The majority of my bus mates are doing the full day, but I didn't think I wanted to hike for 7-8 hours - 4 will do!!
The other thing that I have figured out is to puh for my own room, and then I am more comfortable. I have my own little cottage with one foot of clearance on three sides of the double bed. Still have to go to the shared bathrooms, but it's a start!!
I'll let you know how I do on the glacier tomorrow.
