Lauren and I left Auckland this am in Jimmy James's van to travel the North Island. We went up on the hill (Mt Eden) a volcanic structure this morning to take a look at Auckland before we hit the road. What a wonderful view of the city, including Eden Park that is the place where the All Blacks play their games.
We travelled to Thames, a British Gold-mining town and then on to Hahei Beach. The curse that seems to be with me continued - high rain and wind warnings that has eliminated a number of our potential activities. However, it is a very fun atmosphere - feels like a family vacation. There are four people from Ireland, four from England, Lauren and I from Canada and one guy from Germany. We went wine-tasting this afternoon because sea-kayaking in a storm didn't seem like a good idea. Besides, Dennis of the wine-tasting tour was so charming and knowledgeable that Lauren thought she should marry him. I offered to ask, but she said no! We ended the afternoon with a game ofScrabble for 9 of the travellors - two did the walk through the rain forest in the rain. I did go down to a magnificent beach and got some post - storm pictures. We had a spaghetti dinner that everyone contributed to food wise, cooking wise and cleanup - $5 each for a great meal. I did fade early - happens when the wine is opened at 3:00 in the afternoon! I haven't figured out how to send pictures yet - old computers in most of these places. Will send some soon.
