Hello everyone,
Ok So we said we would try to write a bit sooner and we didnt, but we`ve been busy, as i`m sure you all have been too!
We went to see the Copan Ruinas which were amazing! Much smaller than Tikal but it had some fantastic heirglyphs that were really well preserved.
We also went to a macaw park and we both got to hold 3 huge macaws all at once (very heavy!!) that was good fun and we went again with our Spanish teachers.
We left after 5 days of Spanish and went to the Carribean island of Roatan. There we did loads of great diving, saw piles of gorgeous coral, Hawksbill Turtles, Southern Stingrays, Octopus, and lots of fish of wierd colours. We dived the wreck of a sunken (obviously) Peruvian Cargo Ship, that was really fun and really deep! Oh, and on our last dive we sat at the bottom of the sea with 17 sharks swimming round us - that was pretty good too!
On from Roatan we then moved on to Tegucigalpa, the Honduran Capitol for just 1 night before going off to Leon in Nicaragua.
Leon was another colonial town, but with a large university population, making it seem alot more like a working city. It had the Largest Cathedral in Central America which was really beautiful. The city also has a very interesting ( and also very sad ) history, with various murals around the city depicting some of the atrocities performed by the National Guard during the Somoza years, and many portraits of the much loved "Augustino Sandino" ( who the "sandinista´s" are named after ).
We only stayed in Leon 2 nights as we had to get moving to Granada, next to the huge Lake Nicaragua, the biggest lake in Central America ( it`s huge!!). Granada is another colonial town, but much smaller and much more picturesque. The street are very open and another huge church stands on the edge of the Central Park. It`s really hot here, and everywhere in Nica, but it`s nice to get the sun, as we dont know what weather awaits us in the Andes!!
We are here now doing some more Spanish for just a few days and then will wander around a couple of Volcanoes and Lakes before heading onward.
We have booked our flights to Ecuador for March 12th, so it`s getting really close and really exciting!! We only have about 2 weeks to fit in Costa Rica and Panama, but other travellers seem to think we can do it in that time, so we will see.
We will be puting some photos up within a week or so, so keep a lookout for those.
We hope everyones well back at home, thanks for all the messages!!
For now, thats everything
Love
Kat and Patrick
