Hello everyone!!!
Well its been a long time since we did one of these, but as we have just been working in Nicaragua, we dont have many very exciting things to tell anymore.
But we have just had a 10 day holiday to CUBA!! and we thought that was pretty exciting so have put a few photos up and thought we'd actually say something this time as well.
We arrived at midnight in Habana and went straight to our Casa Particular - Hotels are soo expensive so lots of people rent out one or two rooms of thier homes and sometimes offer meal. It works out cheaper and its lots of fun to live with a Cuban family.
Unfortunatly, our booking hadnt worked so we went across the street to anotherone, which luckily was also very nice.
We spent the first few days wandering various parts of Habana, mostly in the old town with the run down, colonial buildings next to the grand government palaces and museums, washing was hung across the street from 3 or 4 floors up and of course the cars! The Old Cars were fantastic, they really are everywhere - not just on show or just for tourists, but everywhere, Cadillacs, Fords, Buicks, then at the other end there were a rediculous amount of Lada's and zillions of Fiat 500s which are soooo cute! Then we also had motorbikes with supergran style side-cars. It was amazing.
Everywhere you turn there is propaganda for the Revolution still going and lots of blaming the USA for....well most things. Che Guevara is EVERYWHERE!!! More than Fidel and revolutionary quotes graffitied on walls and bins. Kids and Adults alike were playing baseball using old broom handles and bottle caps for bats and balls, filling every single street corner in the evenings
Its unlike any other place we've ever been to and its stunning.
The countryside is beautiful too. We also travelled south to Trinidad for a few days and got to spend some compulsary time on the caribbean beach with warm clear water and white sand - gorgeous.
Food in Cuba is, unfortunatly nothing to rave about, but everything is rationed, so that kinda restricts things i suppose. Rum, on the other hand was very good indeed. Habana Club Rum is in pretty much every coctail available and is really pretty good stuff. Cigars, too are very good. Obviously.
Back in Habana for our last couple of days Patricks birthday present to me was a tour of the City in an open top Cream and Red Buick. I dont know which Buick, but it was old and gorgeous and had the wings out the back and was sooooo grease-lightning!! And sooooo much fun - definatly THE way to se Habana!
So we had a really great holiday in Cuba but dont forget to check out the photos and see if you can spot something different about Patrick!!!
We have now just arrived in Guatemala to start working in another school until October so wish us Luck!!
Lots of Love to everyone
Kat and Patrick
