We arrived in Byron Bay at 10am on Wednesday 16th May 2007 after gettiong the overnight Greyound bus from Sydney.
Byron is a fab tiny little place up the coast. On Day 1 we settled in to Main Beach Backpacers and went for a walk and a nap on the beach. There was a barbeque at the hostel in tehe evening and some Canacadians taught a big group of us how to play Spoons (which I can't handle expalining here!). It was a pretty hilarious grinking game and afterwards we went to a bar called Cocomangas which I beleive is purely a meat-market!! We danced the night away surrounded by people of all nationalisities and as usual there were about two Australians in the place.
Day 2 - We hired out bikes and tried to ride up to the Lighthouse at Cape Byron but it was way too steep and neither of us are that fit! We walked most of it and walked along a path that is on the most Eastern point in Australia. We spotted some turtles swimming out in the sea but unforyunately saw no whales though there are migrating at the moment and should have been visible - darn it!
Day 3 - well this was an interesting day. We went on a trip to Nimbin which is marijuana central! We were on a bus which stops in Nimbin for one hour and the place only has about 20 building in it in total. As soon as you get out the bus people hassle you to buy marijuana, cookies and spliffs. It was hilarious. The place is soo laid back and everyone smokes all day long. It was like the Curry Mile of Manchester but instead of the road smelling of curry it stank of drugs! It was an odd experience. John and I were total prudes and didn't try anything which I must admit I sort of regret but DRUGS ARE BAD! We then stopped off by a waterfall where I refused to jump in cos I'm a sad-case and later on we had (yet another) barbeque. Yum.
Day 4 - we have just had a 3 hour surf lesson out at Flat Rock Beach. It was brilliant and we were taught by a couple of really cool 'surf dude' instructors. I cut my leg, the board smacked me in the face and I fell like I could sleep for a year but it was a hell of a lot of fun and I even managed to STAND on the board rather than fall off or surf on my knees! John did pretty well too and stood a few times more than me. Going to get something to eat now before hedaing out for a few drinks and possibly watching the FA cup final at midnight.
