Sunday 15th April
Journal entry brought to you by (a sleepy but contented) Tami
Having just got off the night bus at 6am in Airlie Beach, we were all (understandably) exhausted. Except Sophie who for some reason managed to sleep really well. We were with James and Louise who were also catching the Habibi that day. James rang the hostel to see if there was a pick up bus and was told that it was just around the corner so we could walk. Twenty minutes later, and absolutely shattered we managed to get to the hostel, and were told that if we wanted to shower it would cost us $5 each. We were not impressed. Eventually the woman behind the desk let us use the campsite showers for free, but the 'showers' turned out to be one shower so we all had to take it in turns. We then spent the rest of the morning trying to stay awake, sorting out clothes for the sailing trip and going on the internet. The hostel was more like a giant outdoor complex so there wasn't a communal sofa room or anything where we could go and sleep, which was a bit annoying. I went on the internet for a bit and when it got to 10 o'clock we went to the Whitsunday Office to check in for our sailing trip. It was there that we met Lea who had been in our room at the Pink House and also happened to be sailing on Habibi! It really is true that the world is just so small when you're travelling! After checking in, Sophie and I went for a subway (legendary), and then eventually headed down to the marina with James and Louise to catch our boat. We also then met a couple called Tim and Nikki who were in James and Lou's Fraser Island group. When we got down to the harbour, we met the first two members of our crew, Shane and Smiley, and made our way on to the boat. I also re-found a girl called Natalie who I had really briefly met in 1770. We found out that our team were 14 Irish, 7 English, 3 Scottish and one German (Lea). Truly a walking joke! Our crew was completed by a swedish girl called Frida and the skipper Greg. The three Scottish lads were a lot of fun, they were called David, Gordon and Graham, and we chatted to them, Natalie and Lea the most on that first day. Early afternoon we had some snacks, which were AMAZING. The food on this trip was just incredible. And for us lowly vegetarians, we had an alternative for EVERYTHING the meateaters had! Like in this particular snack platter they were given sausage rolls, Sophie and I had mini spinach and cheese pastries! Yum! We then carried on sailing into the evening, eventually mooring near Hook Point for the night. We had a gorgeous dinner of barbeque, veggie pasties, potato salads, regular salads, bread rolls.....the list just goes on....
We all went to bed fairly early as we'd been up all the night before and being on a boat really makes you sleepy. A great first day in the Whitsunday's though!- comments
