Monday 26th March
Journal entry brought to you by (a bewildered) Tami
Okay, something MAD happened today. MAD. We woke up really really early to go to the Greyhound stop to catch our bus to Newcastle. We get on the coach, put our stuff down and go to buy water. We get back on the bus and someone says “Tami?”. Obviously, the only person I knew there was Sophie, so I thought, no one could possibly be talking to me…I do, however, give the mystery voice the benefit of the doubt and look down. And in a seat, on this very coach, in Sydney, Australia, is LUCY who I used to work with at Vodafone! Lucy Benbow (is that her surname? I’m not sure) was on the same bus as me! How CRAZY?!!!! The bus journey involved a lot of sleeping on all parts as we were all exhausted, particularly after the party the night before. When we got to Newcastle, we found out we were all staying at the same hostel (yet another weird coincidence) so we walked up together and caught up on our travel plans, and gossiped about Vodafone and all the changes since she had left. Was SO weird!
She was travelling with a girl called Ceris, who I am infinitely jealous of as she is a film animal trainer and has worked with the likes of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton on Sweeney Todd (who we all know are my favourite actor and director), and did the animal training for films like Hot Fuzz – how cool?!
We all walked round the town for a bit, looking at the shops and the beach (which was really pretty). The town seemed unusually quiet though. Later that day we were told that you could sign up for a free dinner at the Irish pub down the road from the hostel, so we all signed up for that. At about 6.30 we had showers and met everyone else downstairs who was heading out. The pub was about 20 minutes walk away, but the free food made it worth it – vegetables and pasta in tomato sauce for us veggies. We then signed up for the pool competition and got talking to these really cool people also at our hostel called Luke and Holly. We lost miserably at the pool competition, but it was a really fun night, we had a lot of laughs and it turns out that Luke and Holly are doing pretty much the same route as us so we discussed meeting up further up the coast. At about 1 ish Sophie and I were getting tired so we left the pub with Lucy and Ceris and walked back to the hostel. And it was the weirdest thing EVER. Newcastle, the second largest town in New South Wales, was just about dead at night. There were no people, no cars. Worst of all, no chippy for cheesey chips. Gutted. It was literally like a ghost town. Weird.
Anyhoo we went to bed and my pillow was RUBBISH, I had to cuddle it instead of lie on it, it was MASSIVE and really firm and it hurt my neck so much.
The hostel is nice though, very clean and tidy.
